the discrimination question

Published

:angryfire how many male rn's out there have experienced discrimination in the workplace? I was terminated from my job in the ED of a local hospital for a rumor that was spread about me and had no truth at all. I was able to get unemployment benefits and the hospital filed a protest to no avail.

I now find that I have been actively blacklisted by this former employer and am in the process of filing formal charges. It is illegal in n.c. for former employers to do this. It is hurting not only my career but the entire nursing field when things like this happen.

Are there any others out there like me? :angryfire

There is such a thing as Professional Slander which Nursing Personnel have sued for in the past. If you truly are not guilty and they have "black listed" you then find an attorney. Your local Bar association can help you find such an attorney..............goodluck

The thing is if I find an attorney they usually cost a great deal of money. I live in north carolina where the good ol boys network is still rampant. I hope I may be able to find one that will work on a contingency basis. It has greatly affected me and my family. I need to work and put my skills to good use. They stood by me through my edu.. and now they need some of the rewards.

I'm sad to hear that such a terrible thing has happened to you. I am just a beginning LPN male student and when I hear about situations such as yours, it gives me a little hesitancy about going into the field. If you know that you have been wronged and you are innocent, then you should fight it. There are lawyers out there that will represent you, and they only collect a fee if you win your case. I'm sure you've worked hard to become a RN, and it IS time for your family to reap some of the rewards. Get a lawyer and have your name cleared and put this unfortunate situation behind you. Good luck and I hope it works out in your favor. Don't give up!! Also, I too live in N.C. What area are you in? Thanks.

this makes me so sad.......

do you not have a nursing union who can take this up for you? here we have the Royal College of Nurses (most of us are members) and they provide legal advice and representation in cases such as this.

I think this sort of thing can happen to anybody, in any profession, and unfortunately that's the society we live in. I wish you the best in your case. In a previous job, I once was falsely accused of sexual harassment and it was a horrible experience. Luckily, administration saw through the accuser's lies and it was essentially erased from the books, but let me tell you there's so much stigma present towards men in the workplace - especially a female dominated workplace, it's definitely a turn off to the profession. All I can suggest is total honesty... or find a new job somewhere else, which you'll have no problem doing. Do you really want to work for a hospital where the administration is so negligent? Good luck.

It's sad to say, but all male nurses will face discrimination at some point in their career, whether it is from co-workers, or patients. Women are discriminated against too, generally by physicians (male and female) and administration (when it comes time to promotions). I would urge all nurses, to at the very least, work where you are a member of a union.

It seems to me that you can't NOT afford a lawyer. Do the math of lost income vs. the cost of a lawyer. I think you'll find that the lost income will hurt more.

Furthermore, for a small fee (sometimes even free), a good lawyer will tell you if they think you have a strong case. If they feel that you don't, they will probably refuse to pick it up even if you want them to. If you do, it's very likely that the hospital will have to pay the lawyers themselves if you win the case.

Look into it.
