I am a discouraged pre nursing student. I started 2 years ago taking my pre reqs for the RN program, found out the demand is so great and so few spots and I am an older busier student I would be better off doing my lvn with possibly bridging when done. Well I went to our workshop the other day and found out I may not get into this program either, she pretty much said anyone with a GPA lower then 3.6 not to even bother applying, they take the first 80% of students on their GPA and 20% random lottery pick they only take 12 students so thats 2 random picks. I have gotten As for the whole 2 years I have been at school thats for sciences and Algebra, however 20 years ago right out of high school my first class was english 101 I got a C this one C brings my GPA way down to below the 3.6 cut off, I asked could I take it over they said only if you got a D or an F. I am so upset that something 20 years ago is going to effect me and they will not work with me. I am a great student now and would make a great nurse. We live in a fairly remote area so we don't have any other options as far as schools. I am trying to make an appointment with an advisor now to see what if anything can be done, this really should not be an issue you should be allowed 20 years later to start again.

Hi Catherine,
Are your grades stopping you from getting into the LVN program? What part of California is your school? That seems really odd that a class, especially English 101 20 years ago would affect your ability to qualify for entrance. I graduated high school 7 years ago with a 3.6, pretty mediocre for my high school, but good enough to get into University. I did atrociously in college, I was smart enough to do the work, but just didn't do it. After 2 semesters, I think my cumulative GPA was less than 2.0, seriously. But in the last 3 yeras I retook or CLEP'ed all of those classes and did well. It doesn't make sense that English 101 so long ago disqualifies you, and that you can't retake. I didn't know courses this old would even be considered unless you have been going to school all that time. Baffling, I think I would talk to another counselor, CLEP out of it or choose another school.
Hope things work out for you!!

The only grade holding me back is the C in English from 1987 Every other class I have for the pre reqs have been As. I don't think its fare either I am waiting to get an appointment with an advisor but not holding out much hope. If I had another school around I would be applying to it too but I don't so I am stuck with batteling the syste.

How many pre req's have you taken? One C (2.0) should not bring down your cumulative GPA that much. Especially if you have taken all pre reqs for RN that should be at least 4 classes and if you have made all A's (4.0) that would make your cumulative grade right at 3.6. In Texas there is a rule that any class that is more than 10 years old you can opt to have it taken off your transcript, you would then have to retake it to get credit but that is what you want anyway. You should check with a counselor. And besides all that stuff you would still have a chance to get those that are random. If you turn in letters of recommendation with your application it will help. Never give up on your dream b/c someone else says you can't do it.
I have been trying to get an appointment with a councelor but its finals week and no one is calling me back. But I was told at the workshop run by the nursing department that you can't take any class again unless you got a d or an F. But I am still plugging away. For the LVN course you only need AP (without lab) dosage calculation and english I have an A in the 2 nursing classes but a C in the enlgish from 20 years ago. I have also taken some pre reqs toward my Rn but they do not count toward your LVN so doesn't matter what my grades are.

My college GPA was low (like 2.5 or something) so I paid $20,000 to attend a private vocational LVN program 90 miles away from my home. I lived in central California and drove to the greater Los Angeles area daily for 1 year and it was manageable, even with my mortgage and other bills.
If there is a will there is a way.

I understand about trying to see a counselor it is hard even when its not finals week. But like I said before you still have a chance there are two spots open for "random picks" if you get your application in with some good letters of recomendation you will stand out in thier minds. Another thing that always helps me no matter what the problem is PRAY! and ask others to pray with or for you. Good luck! It is your dream no one else can tell you that you can not do it.

Thats great you found something for you, I don't have that option though I have 3 small kids to take care of and that kind of commute not to mention money is out of the question.
Yup I am hoping on the 2 random spots LOL I am not letting it get me down any more I am still plugging away I signed up for the next pre reqs I needed for the RN I will still apply for the lvn in the spring I would really rather just do the lvn for now I am not sure i am ready for the RN commitment for my situation yet, whatever is meant to happen will I'll just keep doing my part.
