Direct Entry Programs- How hard to get in?

Thanks for all of your responses to all of my previous posts. As you probably assume, I'm evaluating all of my options including ADN, BSN, and Direct-Entry MSN. The direct entry programs look extremely appealing, but seeing that they are at the best of colleges, I don't know how easy they are to get in.

Does anyone know what the typical GPA, scores, acceptance rates of these programs are? Anyone have any experience applying?

I'm in MD, so I'd consider Hopkins, but Columbia, MGHI in Mass, Case Western, Vanderbilt, Pace, and Yale also look appealing.

Seeing as nursing traditionally isn't an "ivy league" profession, are the credentials required for these programs less than what a typical "ivy" student would need?

I'd love to hear experiences with any programs.........

Thanks Gennaver! Yes, I felt really good about the interview at Regis and I think it would be a great program for me. The only drawbacks I see are the Family specialty (vs Women's Health) and the "regional" reputation of the school. 'Course that would only really be an issue if we moved out of New England. I think it's partly because I went to a small Catholic college for undergrad that Regis felt very comfortable and homey to me.

Interesting idea jess. Thanks for the feedback. I am still undecided as to specialty. I always lean towards Women's Health but I want to keep my options open. The women's health track at Simmons is actually a dual specailty (Adult/Women's health). I think I like the idea of having the broader adult qualification, just in case.

Being accepted just brings a whole new set of decisions/worries (but we'll take it) :chuckle

I know what you're saying- MGH has a dual specialty WH/Adult too and I really like that. From what I've heard WHNPs have a harder time finding work in their specialty at least in the Northeast these days. I totally love Women's Health and always have- but I suspect we will be somewhat handicapped in our job searches because of our direct entry pathway- so I feel like having a broader specialty at least in the beginning of my career wouldn't be a bad thing.

I love having to think thorugh this stuff with it being a reality and not just speculation!

Hey Gennaver- How was your wedding?!?! :)

-Jess

Nothing from BC or MGH- but....

I got my acceptance letter from Regis! Yay!!!! I'm so relieved!!!!

-Jess

That is so great, Jess! You're in.

MGH and BC can eat their hearts out now. You might not even accept their offer(s) if you get them. You might just have to think it over and let them know say in a week or two, or maybe wait and send out the letter a week or two after that, or a maybe make your decision get delayed a week or so after that....

Congratulations :balloons: :rotfl: :Melody:

I know it! You know- it's really true, though. Not the delaying the decision just 'cause I can part- but the choosing Regis anyway part. :D

Regis has the option of a night/weekend track which would enable me to use less childcare and relieve a BIG part of my stress about how hard this would be on my kids. If I went to say, MGH, they would be in daycare from 8:30 till 5 or 5:30 at least. At Regis I could just get a sitter weekdays from 4 till 7:30 when my husband gets home and weekends my mom said she would help. I would probably need some extra help during the days as well so I could study- but all in all it would be far less than what I would need to enroll in a more traditional program.

Now I just have to see if I get into either of the other programs and if I do- convince my hubby that Regis may be our best option.

-Jess

Congratulations to you Jess! :balloons:

did regis suggest a reply date?

Are you still going to check your mail?? We need those daily updates!!

I have to reply to Regis by 3/29. I will definitely still be checking my mail!! I won't really relax till I know what the deal is with the other two schools. But I have to say it is nice to have one acceptance letter to raise my spirits if the other ones aren't as happy!

-Jess

Wow- 4 is a lot! That's great though that you could keep them from last year and then add a supplemental one when you re-applied. I'm so happy for you that you're in! Your program starts soon, right? June or July?

Thanks for the congrats- I'm *very* relieved to have at least one option for the upcoming year!

-Jess

Yup- UCSF starts in mid-June. I've heard the first year is pretty insane with work and clinicals. I'm excited to be back in school again. Especially in such a challanging dynamic learning environment. It's tough that these schools are so competitive, but at the same time it guarantees great fellow students to learn with.

I know the feeling of relief, let me tell you!! I've never been so tense in my life than waiting to hear back.

Yay! I hope you're right! Imagine getting both letters on the same day? After all this waiting/speculating about when they will arrive?!

Hi there,

Thanks, it went really nice. :)

The sentiment of the words the rev spoke got to me, (we agreed about no crying and well that agreement was broke as I was sniffling and tearing and so on).

Mr. & Mrs.....

p.s. aaah, the bliss, (and all that :chuckle )
