Different shift differentials for LPN's and RN's

I was wondering if I could have a few opinions about shift differentials at different hospitals throughout Ohio.If you work at a hospital could you tell me if there is different shift diff's for RN's than for the LPN's.For example,at the hospital where I work RN's get .75 more an hour shift diff than LPN's on off shifts.Thanks

I work at a hospital north of Cincinnati. The shift differential is 12% of your regular pay, for 2nd and 3rd shifts, no matter if you are a CNA, LPN, or RN.

I'm not in Ohio, but I know a couple of hospitals in Tennessee that do that. Seems very wrong to me; if you're going to compensate people a little extra for working the hours normal people don't want, they should all get the same diff, whether they're LPN, RN, Head Floor Sweeper.

Thanks for your reply,and I also agree with you.It used to be that way but the higher powers that be have suddenly decided to be even more anti-LPN than they were before,hence a difference in the shift diff.I as an LPN make the same amount in shift diff as the houskeeper or dietary staff that is working the off shifts.I didnt mind that before but now I feel as LPN's have been pushed back down on the ladder,if you know what I mean :uhoh3:

I'm sorry to say that I do know what you mean. I was an LPN for 3 years before finishing my RN, and I remember very well some utterly asinine tactics employed by administration that seemed to have no purpose other than to antagonize and insult LPNs. The end result was that a huge number of LPNs left in a huff, and everyone suffered from having such a large number of nurses leaving. It's one thing to be predjudiced and ignorant, but when you self-destruct by alienating droves of nurses, that's just plain stupid.

I am not in Ohio but I do know that several hospitals in WV do pay LPN's a lesser shift diff than the RN's. I think it is unfair, demeaning, and disrespectful.

Many of the LPN's have just kept their feelings to themselves on the subject and kept their jobs. Others, the younger ones, leave and go into LTC, it is a shame. There should be room for LPN's and RN's in both settings.

Is it because the shift differential is a percentage of your hourly wage? I mean I know some places pay a percentage so the LPNs would get less because they have a lower hourly wage.

I couldnt agree with you more,it is completely demeaning and disrespectful and I personally have a very hard time keeping my feelings to myself(which usually lands me in trouble,lol)I have been at my job for 9 yrs,and this is new policy.They could have implemented this policy with new hires and left well enough alone for the people who have dedicated themselves to this hospital.I do not think I will be able to stay at this employer for this reason and many other one's..they are constantly treating LPN's as if our licenses are as good as the toilet paper they just used in the bathroom.The sad thing about it is when I do leave,they will end up hiring an RN to replace me who will end up just costing them more when an LPN is able to work and do the job that I do(it doesnt have to be a RN,as long as one is working with me on the floor).

No,the new shift diff goes in "tier's"(1 and 2)Most hourly employes are in Tier 1....housekeeping,dietary,Nursing assistants,LPN's we all have the same shift diff,then Tier 2 is for the RN's,just RN's

Well there is probably only 20 or so of us LPN's left anyway at this hospital.I think they pretty much are treating us as disrespectful and insulting as they can so they can drive us out.I have been there for 9yrs and along time ago they did try to do away us(I was in a "safe" area,it was a lab and they didnt hire RN's there)But in the house,they completely did away with all the LPN's then it was the RN's who were all having to do patient care work with the nursing assistants and they all got their feathers ruffled and really started complaning about that so they slowly hired some back and a few new ones...so I am not sure exactly what their agenda is unless they(the higher powers) think the RN's wont mind the extra work load of helping aides out and doing all their vital work when the LPN's are all gone as long as they are making a decent wage.And,don't mean to be nosey but how long did it take for you to go back to school to become an RN,and did you go FT or PT? :p
