Difference between New Grad RN program/Residency and Regular RN Staff I job?

Nurses New Nurse

Hi everyone,

New nurse here! Just passed the NCLEX on August 2021. Was wondering what the difference between New Grad RN program VS applying to a Regular RN job?

I know New Grad RN programs are orientation are typically 12-18 weeks depending on the hospitals.

How long is orientation if a brand new nurse were to apply at a regular RN job?

Thanks!

Sometimes orientation such as learning the computer system and policies etc... in general are the same for both new grad and regular RN job .  New Grad RN programs usually provide more shadowing with a preceptor/mentor until you feel comfortable working alone.  If a new grad applies for a regular nursing job, (if hired), they may pay you a little more, but probably not expect you to need a mentor/preceptor for more than 3-4 weeks.  I know new grads that had a preceptor for as long as 6 months.  It really depends on you and your employers agreement.

The benefit of a new grad program is basically to protect your nursing license (and patient safety/hospital liability).  There is a higher chance of a new grad loosing their nursing license if they go straight to a regular nursing job without formal training.
