CSULB Nursing Program Fall 2023

Did anyone get an email back from the school of nursing yet about our official acceptances?

@tisiphone36 Hi I'm just curious about how your schedule has changed throughout your time there. It looks like first semester is pretty mellow with only one day of class one clinical and one clinical prep day. Was your first semester clinical prep day also on the weekend? I'm curious because I am torn between commuting and moving there. So I'd like to know how many days of the week you have class/have to be in the area for clinical work throughout the program if you don't mind answering

Some classes will have their clinicals on Monday which means they will have to pre-plan on Sunday. This happened to me both in 1st and 3rd semester. As for each semester, it really kind of varies and I imagine it would also vary depending on whether or not you're in the semester or trimester program. For example during the Summer, I had class Mondays and Wednesdays, pre planning Monday, and clinical/ lab Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are semesters you can count on four days including pre planning and others where you may only spend three days a week at campus and clinical sites.  It is possible to commute. We have a few students that do.

So I was wondering if taking my GWAR assessment really late will affect me during orientation. I missed the day to register for the 4/29 date so the next time I can do it is on 6/2, a day before the 6/3 orientation. I understand that I can possibly have the assessment on hold? Just not exactly sure how that would work.

I think Mrod said they took theirs during the first semester I don't think it's an issue for the first semester but seems like it's a prerequisite for a second semester class

Yea you can take it your first semester! Just take the earliest date so you have your scores back in time to be able to register for GERN 400 your second semester. I don't think buying the Funds book or the patho book was really worth it. I honestly have only used them to cite stuff for my care plans. All the studying I do is either with the online ATI books (you also get a physical copy), PowerPoints, and I just look up videos (registered nurse RN is a lifesaver) on the topics we're going over. Another tip is to try and pick patients in your clinical with the same diseases/conditions you're studying and it will help you get some hands on learning! I've heard that it's a waste to buy the Elsevier package but I haven't started first semester yet so IDK if I'll need the books for those classes. I haven't even opened up my APA guide handbook-just go online to Purdue OWL for help with APA or use the librarian online chat to help you. The only books I've really used for first semester are the NANDA book and the Mosby's drug guide.

Save your money on the books.  I rarely used them.  You will use the drug book, but NANDAs and everything else you will most likely find online or in journal articles or UpToDate.  

As for GWAR, get it over with.  It is easy and you will need it for GERN 400 second semester.  

Actually their recommended drug book is awful.  Use lexicomp during preplanning or get the Davis drug guide.  The Davis Drug Guide is far superior in my opinion.

Unfortunately you have to purchase the ATI package in order to do the required modules.
