hi there!

Im planning to eventually move to australia after I graduate with CRNA school. Im just wondering if Australia has nurse anesthetist? Is there a website you guys can direct me? thanks for your help! any advice or comments are welcome!

;) Nez

I have never heard of it, there are no endorsments for it on any states nursing board.......however they are crying out for nurses that have experience or grad dip in perianaesthic nursing or theatre qualifications.

Only Doctors that are classified Anaethetists knock our fine Australians out, though in remote areas GPs that have done a anaethetists course does it.....one nurse I have spoken to in theatre has stated most of the time she does alot of the work while the anaethetists caught up with the morning paper...don't know how true that is....:D

You in the states may think this is old fashioned not letting nurses do this, personally I believe the buck stops somewhere and this is best left with the doctors....doing the assisting (most likely doing most of the work) is the most I think nurses here are willing to go...as this part of surgery is more important than the surgery itself and this is done by a doctor specialising in surgery!

I apologise to all those in the US who are a qualified person in this matter, but we are not backward just realists.

No, we are backwards in term of advanced practice nursing (largely thanks to the AMA...) - just look at how ridiculous the NP process is, not to mention how little they are allowed to do!

Nurse anesthetists have been safely providing anesthesia services in the US for decades and there is significant research that patient outcomes are unchanged. The nurses have advanced degrees and undergo rigorous training. There is still a supervising anesthesiologist who rotates between ORs.

OP - sorry, nope, nothing like it in Australia. Shame - I live in the US now and it looks like an awesome job, I would have done it in a heartbeat if it was transferable to Australia. Went with ACNP instead!

Stand corrected. :)

Oh i see.... well what exactly are the limitations of an NP?

Thanks again for the replys, my apologies for being late. Hope you guys have a wonderful week! :)

The closest we have in my hospital are nurse sedationists who administer propofol to patients having minor procedures like bone marrow biopsies.

I've never heard of a nurse sedationist before. What qualifications do they have and what is their scope of practice?
