Credit reports

I'm curious. I have heard that people are denied employment because of investigations into their personal lives, contacting neighbors, former employers, etc. Is this true? I have never seen anything of a personal nature on my credit reports, just financial.

I can see where you might possibly be denied employment because of an extremely bad financial background, where, as in government jobs, they might fear that you are vulnerable to commit some financial crime.

Any have any info on this? I would hate to think they are doing it in a credit report but you do not know about it.

Why do employers ask for a credit check? What are they looking to find from it?

I have heard of this being done...not sure how often it is actually used, or how much weight is put on it...but it is used as a reliability detector...like if you are late every single month in your bills...is it because you can't pay? or is it because you are lazy and are paying them? Or is it because you are bad at managing your money? How is it going to be reflected in the rest of your life...are you lazy? will you be late for work every day? Are you bad at time management? There are a whole lot of ways it can be interpreted. I've never personally known someone that was turned down for a job because of it though...

I thought the only businesses that did credit checks for employment were financial institutions. I'm pretty sure they have to get your consent to run your credit history, though, so you would be aware of it.

I work in retail right now and yes the employers I have applied to do all kinds of checks, criminal, credit and a drug test (UA) and these are just parttime minimum wage jobs. I am sure in nursing they have to do even more checking.

I asked this question on the last job interview I had. The HR guy said they use the same 'background check' company for everyone- regardless of what they are applying for. If you are applting for a nursing position (where fincance is not part of your day to day job) they are not really looking at that. Thank God, because I'd never be able to get a job :chuckle .
