I just don't know what to do... is this something I could be let go for? I' m trying to get into classes with the red cross but they don't have any until january. please help I'm terrified of what could happen. HELP! thanks fellow nurses : )

It is usually out the month in which you got it. So yours should have been out 5/2008. I know at my facility, we wouldn't be allowed to work until we got renewed. I'm really not sure what your facility's rules state. My manager keeps up with all of that and posts reminders for us telling who needs to update their license, TB skin tests, CPR certification, etc. I would get in contact with him/her asap and see what you need to do.

American Heart Association is good for 2 years and American Red Cross is good for one year.

They should be good to the date you took it last, not the end of the month. I have seen some AHA cards printed withe the 31st on the card when the class was taken on the 17th. It is expiries on the 17th not the 31st. I'm not sure why they started printing them like that.

Yes your is clearly expired and yes you could be told you can not work on the floor until it is renewed. I'd get on line and look for any place that might offer cpr and get there asap.

Check with your local fire department. (Or any other one, if yours doesn't offer the healthcare provider class.) It usually doesn't take that long to get into a class, and it certainly doesn't cost as much as it would if you took it with The American Red Cross. (Mine only cost me $6!)

I agree that you have definately expired and also to check with your local fire departments and also try paramedics. Call every hospital around to see if they have anything. Unfortunately, you'll have to retake the whole course and can't just renew. The course is only 2 days here, but finding the whole course now could be difficult. If you just had to renew, every hospital has renewal every month around here and most would squeek you in with their staff (for a hefty fee, of course).

AHA cards are valid for 2 years, but they are good through the end of the month. So in the above example, a class taken on 1-17-07 would be valid through 1-31-09.

Per the AHA Program Administration Manual (4th ed., effective 3-1-08, page 21):

All AHA course cards are valid for 2 years through the end of the month in which the card was issued.

(NRP, which is an AHA/AAP hybrid, considers a card valid only 2 years through the exact date.)

Expired or not, you can complete the didactic/test portion online and have an instructor validate your skills & issue an AHA card. Go to www.onlineaha.org and you can purchase HCP BLS Part I for $17.50.

There's a link on that site to help you locate a course/instructor for your skills check-off.

How right you are! I totally forgot you can do the book version online including the written test and then just call to find who can test you out on the physical part. Check out American Heart Association web site. Excellent suggestion!

you might want to try craigslist for an instructor, I have had some friends who were able to find someone this way to validate skills after doing the online portion. Otherwise try calling the boyscouts/girl scouts they sometimes have classes or know instructors (just besure to find a healthcare provider course) Local YMCAs sometimes are good places too.
