about contract terms working in the U.K

Hi! Anyone who knows the different contract term/period when working in the U.K.? For example if the job offer's contract term is 1 or 2 years, does it mean after those years, the contract is ended and the nurse will go back to the country of origin? I'm confused whether working in the U.K. is a temporary one or would it mean, you'll be a permanent resident eventually. Please kindly tell me because I'm having a hard time researching for the real answers. Thank you so much.

It means exactly what it says, you are contracted to work for 1 year or 2 years or whatever and then the contract ends. You are then unemployed unless your employer extends the contract or you find another job. However, during the run of the contract you are quite at liberty to look around for another job - even with the same employer. Usually you only have to give 1 months notice although they may insist on 3 months - it will be in the contract. Most of these contracts are to cover maternity leave or perhaps it is a research post which is only going to last a set length of time.

Check the wording as although universities work in NHS hospitals if you have a university contract pay and conditions are different from NHS. There should be nothing hidden and what it says is what it means, employers do not want to go to an industrial tribunal to defend a dodgy contract - they would lose.

Should also add, unsure of your resident status, you will need to look at the terms of your visa. A lot of times if you are here for a job when the job ends so does your residential status.

@GrumpyRN: thank you for your reply. I have received a job offer with a certain contract term and I'm now hesitant whether to sign it or not because I'm from the Philippines and for me, going abroad for work is rewarding and it would be more heartwarming to be a permanent resident on that country eventually not only for stability but also for continuance of providing care for the clients/patients. It would be difficult to transfer to another hospital if that happens. Anyway, your response is much appreciated. Thank you.

check out UK Borders and see what requirements are for becoming a PR and if you need a certain time frame like 2 years then see if you can add that to the contract

Hi Silverdragon102. I'm hoping to get settled there if i'll be able to continue the contract. Thanks!

Hi,

I am from the Philippines and will be working in UK 2 months from now on a Tier 2 visa. I was wondering if I can get my son to live with me in the UK like after 6 months or one year. I would really appreciate your response.

Thank you.
