Commuting to nursing school?

Hi everyone, I'll be starting an accelerated nursing program at Trent University in Peterborough which is 28 months in length. It's located about an hour away from my parent's house (93.9 km). I only have classes twice a week, so I was thinking about driving there instead. I do have a car at my disposal albeit it's a 2006 model. It's also proving to be cheaper than renting a room near campus, and if I were to do that, I can't afford to pay for car insurance and gas. Do you think it's possible/practical to commute?

My BSN program is 90 miles from my home. I drive a 98 Toyota there and back twice a week, choosing to stay in town on the days I have class. I either stay with classmates or in a cheap local hotel. Gas in CA is insanely expensive but all these costs were simply folded into our budget. It's doable, you just have to figure it out. Classes twice a week and a one hour commute seem luxurious to me. You can make it work.

The nursing programs I'm looking into are both at least an hour from where I live. I know I won't have a full time schedule since it's a bridge program. But it will all be worth it in the end.

I just got into an ADN program that is going to require me to drive over an hour 4 times per week. I haven't quite figured out yet what I'll do about the commute, but I might see if I can stay with a friend who lives in the area.

Hi nullify! If you haven't already you should join the Trent Compressed Nursing 2015-2017 facebook group. See you in September!

I'm a compressed student at Trent - a lot of people in my class commute from the GTA, Oshawa, etc. It's definitely doable. Just keep in mind winter driving (Peterborough is pretty rough on road maintenence), and don't expect to get all of your clinical placements closer to your region - some people luck out and get the spot they request, but a lot of people wind up with Peterborough area placements even when they request the ones closer to home.

A hour each way twice a week sounds qutie feasible. 2006 isn't THAT old! lol

I commuted one hour each way, three evenings a week and every other weekend. I recommend looking for a buddy to carpool with. Most definitely beneficial and then you can discuss school stuff & quiz each other to kill the time.
