CNEcl

I am in the process of studying for the CNEcl. I currently have the CNE certification. For those of you who have taken the CNEcl, what study tips do your have? What resources did you find to be most beneficial?

Hello Professor D!

I registered for the CNEcl a few seconds ago ?. #ilovestress.

I passed the CNE exam back in 2016 and only used the Diane Billings book. For the CNEcl, I have purchased the CNEcl review book Price, Willson & Gittings). So far, it seems like an easy read, which as we all know, is very deceptive.

Did you pass the CNEcl? What resources did you use or are currently using (if you have not yet taken it)?

Anyone else on this forum take the CNEcl? Or know anyone, who knows anyone who took the CNEcl?

Thanks and looking forward to some feedback/replies.

Hello aanurse,

I have not taken the exam yet. I have 3 resources in addition to Billings and Halstead: Clinical Nurse Educator Competencies from NLN, Clinical Teaching Strategies in Nursing (Oermann), and the CNEcl review guide by Wittman-Price. I took and passed the CNE IN 2017 and Billings and Halstead was the best resource in my opinion. I have received my authorization to test, but haven't set a date. I'm in my last year of my PhD program as well, so I'm trying to work it around that schedule.

Thanks for the reply, Professor D! I do have the Shellenbarger (NLN) book too, but most of what is contained in that book is better organized in Whittman-Price book. The long paragraphs in the NLN book make me sleepy. I think I am going to hunker down and study for about 4 weekends and then take it. I will keep you posted.

Good luck on that PhD !!!!

Thanks!! Guess I’ll do the same!!! Keep me posted

Hi Professor D! I passed the CNEcl today. It was a lot easier than the CNE but then again I took an earlier version of the CNE. In the end, the Whitman-Price CNEcl review book was least helpful.

Good luck!

Congratulations!!!! I still haven't scheduled my exam. I think I am going to go ahead and do so. How long did you study and what did you find most helpful?

Thanks! I did not have access to too many resources so I used what I could lay my hands on:The clinical teaching in nursing (Oermann, Hellenbarger, Gaberson), Billings (sim and clinical chapters), Evidence-based teaching (Cannon & Bowell). I read plenty of journal articles based on my areas of weakness. I wish I had not spent the money on the review guide. I mentioned in a previous post that I eliminated the Shallenberger (NLN)clinical competencies book from my list at the very beginning of my study and I am glad I did. I am sure it is a good resource, but I did not have the time for the long paragraphs. This exam is a critical thinking/application exam. I have worked as a clinical educator for many years and this experience is what got me through the exam. It was tough, but doable. I studied during the weekends and did some journal articles during the week. I was always in the material, reading and understanding concepts, but I think the biggest difference was the marathon sessions during the weekends. This past weekend, the hubby and kids were on their own eating takeout, frozen pizzas, watching TV AND they did not bother me. I took PTO Friday last week and two days this week, giving me a 5-day weekend to study. Even my kids knew that mommy is taking a BIG exam and could feel the tension in the house. In the end, it was all worth it. ?

I've scheduled my exam being that I only had a little less than a month before my authorize expired. I will keep you posted!! Wish me luck!

I followed this conversation closely to see if anyone had updates right up until the time that I tested! Luckily, I passed the first time! It was harder than I thought. I would highly recommend the self assessment that is available for purchase through PSI; that was probably the most helpful resource. Good luck everyone!

Congrats on that defense!!
Sorry I don't have any advice, I just took my regular CNE exam today and passed. My only advice which doesn't really apply to you is just schedule that test so that it will force you to study. But you had a defense to deal with and that was more important!

Good luck on your upcoming exam!
