CNA SKILLS

Published

I will be taking my skills test in a couple weeks and I was wondering what skills everyone had to do...i know hand washing is the first skill...did everyone have to do 5 skills total?..and i want to know if anyone failed and how it happened...i will be testing in Wisconsin so i know they are a picky state!

I think the number of skills depends on the state. I only had 4 skills if you include hand washing.I had Hand Washing, Recording Resperations, Transfering from Bed to Wheelchair, Mouth and Denture Care. I messed up really bad on Mouth Denture Care and I thought for sure I was going to fail, but thankfully she pasted me.

Good Luck I hope you do well.

I think it really depends on your tester. For the first time, I got hand washing, peri care, dressing someone with a CVA, ted hose, and I dont remember the fifth skill. My person failed me for not talking to the mannequin when I was doing peri care, which I thought was ridiculous. The second time I took it, even though I was supposed to be tested on my failed skill, I got hand washing, feeding, dressing, emptying a catheter, and a weight.

I tested in california and I was given four skills to do. I had handwashing, Range of motions for lower limbs, Nail care and taking the weight of the patient. Helpful tip, in every skill you do, keep in mind the safety of your patient and your safety. Its critical in every skill. Good luck!

I took my test in Washington and the hand washing skill was part of the five skills. So basically four skills plus hand washing. We paired up with the other people testing and went in two by two so, unless you are testing with people you know, you'll most likely be meeting these folks for the very first time you gotta get over any shyness real fast as you'll be up close and personal with a stranger as you do your skills. Just keep in mind that they are there for their skills too and are just as nervous! They had binders on the counters next to the beds and they told us each to turn to a certain page and it had listed a random five skills to do. I had to take a radial pulse, do range of motion on knee and ankle, ambulate with gait belt and make an occupied bed. My partner had to weigh me, feed me and reposition me on my side. We had to wear a hospital gown over own clothes and hop into a hospital bed when we were playing the client. It was actually kind of fun once we got into the swing of it and just pretended it was the real deal. We had a very nice examiner who allowed us to help each other and passed us both even tho my partner forgot my shoes when she went to weigh me, (forgot to make mention of them or non skid footwear) and she forgot a few other minor things and I didn't have time to finish my last skill. When we left the examination room the others waiting on their turns crowded around us asking us how bad it was, etc, and you could cut the tension with a knife!

Thanks for the great advice and sharing your own personal experiences everyone!

I had hand washing, foot care, weight, ROM on shoulder, positions on the side. I made satisfactory on everything except hand washing because I missed two steps: called client by name and introduce myself which is one step, nor wet wrist thoroughly which are neither critical steps and I failed the the skill part and must retake skills. Be careful and do 100% on hand washing. I don't want to see anyone make the same mistake and fail. Every state has their own regulations and requirements. Good Luck!
