Any state where the wages are higher, the cost of living will be as well. I could not make ends meet on my income if I did not have my husbands as well. If overtime is available that's usually a way to make some extra money during vacations and such. Sadly, if you want to make better money you will probably have to do something other than being a CNA.

I know but I was thinking if it was a bigger city like Chicago Boston the mass transit cost would off set the cost of living because here in Ohio you have to have a car which is so expensive

I used to live in the San Francisco area. Starting pay is about 17.00 an hour for a CNA, but the cost of living is ridiculous. I could not have lived on my own unless I rented a room, which I was at about 400/month. When I lived there it was roughly 2k a month for a studio apartment, and that is on the lower end of it. I hope that helps. Good luck.

Edit: 2k a month in the city of San Francisco, outlying areas it's about half that maybe a little less, but then you have to factor in transportation as well.

New Jersey starting for CNA with no experience was $15 an hour 3 years ago

Thanks for the advice . I think ill just find another job and wait till I get my lpn to start working in nursing. Cna(s) do way to much of the dirty work to get paid like they do but thanks again

You would make more in Boston but would have to live in boston to use the mass transit and that costs even more than the rest of the state, which is insane. I lived south of Boston and paid about 1300 for a 2 bedroom. !

The experience really is invaluable though, so if you can make it work with overtime during vacations or an additional income (maybe only do it PRN, just for the experience) it would be worth it, imo.

I'm in Iowa. Starting where I am is $11.75. After two years I make $13.25 with my shift premium (2nd shift), which is an added $1/hr.

I keep seeing this advertisement for the City of Greenwich Connecticut. Union CNA job that pays $18hr. Must be nice? I guess they have their own city nursing home?

This is pretty much the best answer on here.

Yes bit when rent is 1500 a month 18 an hour doesn't go far.

Well that's nobody's fault but your own, next time in the future hopefully you'll do research before you join and complete a program, only to find out how much you really make upon exiting the program.

That's like finishing school as a nurse, only to discover you don't get paid as much as a doctor.
