I want to become a CNA. I live in Memphis and wonder if anybody can give me some good advice on some schools that offer this program.
Thanks

HI, I didnt go to school in Memphis I went just over the bridge to Mid South Community College in West Memphis Ark. Their program is awesome! The instructors want you to succeed and help you in any way they can. I just went thru the program and loved it. They have it during the week, evenings or even Saturdays for one semester. You do your clinicals at a nursing home and I liked it. If your willing to make that drive once a week like I did I dont see you regretting it. Good Luck!
Thank you!
I actually contacted the school yesterday. I am excited because I really wanted to take the class at a real college vs a tech school. For one it is a lot cheaper. My ultimate goal is to become an RN and MidSouth want you to take the CNA class before you can apply for Nursing school anyways so that works out perfect for me.
They do however require me to take the compass test. Im nervous because I haven't been to high school for 15 years.
Do you know if they help you find a job afterwards or at least assist you finding a job? How much did you pay including books?
Thanks again!
Oh Gosh, I wish I could help out. I dont remember. The book I got from another student so I only paid 25 bucks for it. All of the students resell their books so it shouldnt be to hard to find. As far as what it cost my work reimburses me and I dont remember what it is. But it is the regular going rate of their semester hour. I saw some places for as high as 4,000 bucks! I didnt have to take the compass test. I already had college when I started. I did take the CNA course with hopes of it helping me get into nursing school, but I am not going to Mid South Community College. They only have a day time program so I opted for Southwest's evening and weekend program. I hope this info helps, there was not much to it Im afraid Jenn
One more thing, the competition is not as bad at Mid South's CC. Every person in my CNA class that applied (to nursing program that is) got in if they made a B or above. I got and A. It was easy to do even if you have been out of school for a while. The only ones that did not get in were the slackers who got low C's and D's. You have to take a skills test at the end in front of a state administrator to get your certificate. Everyone in my class passed and we had 26 people, so they dont leave anything out and make sure eveything is covered. Jenn
AND (i keep forgetting to put stuff in) They have something called Career Pathways that you should apply for. It pays for school, books and does help you find a job when you graduate. But CNA jobs are fairly easy to find because there is a high turnover rate in the field. (maybe I remembered everything this time!)
Thanks, you have been very helpful! I appreciate it!

NHC in Somerville has a CNA program for people that intend to work there.
I believe Kirby Pines does it as well. I'd check into something at a LTC facility. I would imagine the training is better at one of the career schools but it is faster and free at the nursing homes.

check into nhc. i think they do the class for free too. yes, they want you to work there afterwards but you do not have to guarantee it

NHC's CNA classes are free. I completed the one in Franklin, TN this summer. At my facility, you are not required to work for them, but they do hire from the pool of students. The only cost associated with my class was the uniform and the book, which was only a deposit. The class was 2.5 weeks of classroom and clinical. I took my state exam today and should know Wednesday if I passed.
The NHC in Somerville is nice. I know the administrator and my great-aunt is a resident there. I grew up in Memphis and the commute isn't bad at all.
Good luck - I hope it works out for you!
