Cna exam help

Published

Hi, about to take exam. I've read a bunch of manuals but a couple of things aren't clear to me-Can anyone help? They may sound stupid but I don't want to fail the test

1. where is it ok to put the dirty linen when making an occupied bed? at the bottom of the bed? The manuals always say to put them in the hamper last.

2. shoulder ROM. What position should the patient be in supine or sitting?

3. If you need to measure output, where do you put the bedpan after you pour it into the measuring device

Thanks

Okay, I don't know how good of answers these are, but this is a mixture of what I do in practice and what I've learned.

1. I always bring a bag into the room I'm working in and open it up on a chair. That way I don't have to be naughty and throw dirty linens on the floor. Although in a pinch I throw dirty linens on the floor which is a no-no per the books.

2. For shoulder ROM you put the patient in whatever position is most comfortable for them. I've learned that having the patient sitting on the edge of the bed allows you to do more ROM, but if you are doing PROM on a patient the chances of them sitting up indepentantly is slim.

3. I always set the bedpan on the bathroom floor. Or set it on top of the toilet.

In class we are taught the following:

1) dirty linens go straight to the hamper (but if there isn't one in your test room the plastic bag is a good suggestion and is what we do at clinicals)

2) ROM was taught to us with the patient in supine. I suppose it doesn't matter as long as you are able to preform the fulll ROM, but supine seems to be the easiest

3) we are taught to clean, dry, and store the bedpan in the bottom drawer of their bedside stand. make sure there is a barrier (paper towel) between the measuring device and the surface you placed it on.

I'm sure it differs a little from state to state, but again this is what I was taught in class. Hope I helped :wink2:

Good luck on your exam and let us know how it went :) I'm nervous too... my test date is scheduled for 6/5/08 :uhoh21:

Thanks, it does help. I'm just a little nervous because I know they are nitpicky and it always has put the dirty linen in the hamper as the last step and not take off top sheet put in hamper etc. so I think if I put the dirty sheets at the bottom of the bed will I fail? I've seen people put them in the dirty pillow case but change pillow case that is step 16 or something!

Good luck on your test!

As far as putting them at the bottom... I wouldn't just because they're considered contaminated and you don't want to put them on the clean sheets... also be mindful about not holding them against your uniform. You always want to hold them away from you. If the hamper is right there in the test room, I would put them in the hamper as soon as they are removed. Just use good judgement. They are not as nitpicky about what order you go in (though some steps go in order for necessity) as long as you think safety and be mindful about contamination. Good luck.
