What exactly is "Chicagoland"? Is it just a little nickname for Chicago or does it define a certain area in Chicago? I'm moving to Chicago next year and I have seen this term while apartment hunting, as well as on this site. TIA!

It refers to the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. The chicago metro area basically. I went to college there, loved it and am moving back next year when I'm done with NS.

As an outsider in I guess the word Chicagoland sounds a bit umm wierd. I know in other areas they don't call it New York Land and LA land. Someone pointed this out to me before and I didn't realize how odd it sounded til it was said to me like that.
But I always think of Chicagoland to mean the city of Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Generally,
It's the greater metropolitan area. City, surrounding suburbs, multiple counties. Includes 8 counties.
