Cgfns to take or not?

World Registration

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if I should take CGFNS EXAM, I'm not a board passer

I took NLE exam in my country (Philippines) last June 2012 but unfortunately I didn't passed. I was planning to take it again but my FIANCÉ VISA was approved,

My dilemma now is I wanted to get license here in MASSACHUSETTS, but I'm confused if they would let me take it even though I'm not a RN.

Also I'm going to take IELTS really soon, but I'm confused On what should I put on the application form...

For EMPLOYMENT

For LICENSURE REGISTRATION

(I know it's basic, but I'm confused ) cos I'm not sure if I'm gonna be able to be given CGFNS EXAM for NCLEX.

Anyone here in MASSACHUSETTS who could help me answer my query!? Thank you so much for whoever can help me! I'm sorry about these simple questions, but I'm getting frustrated now.

Why not just e-mail or call the MA BON and get a more direct answer? Bring up the issue of being a non license holder from the Phils and state that you don't have a valid and current PH nursing license, can you still get approval?

If they tell you, you're okay, then start the CGFNS process.

However, if they do require the copy of the PH license to be verified, then you'll have to find another state to work and live in that does not require the PH license. But just know that getting any out of state RN license doesn't mean you can endorse back into MA, without still meeting the PH license requirements of the MA BON.

You cannot take the CGFNS exam if you were never licensed in the Philippines. Being licensed in the country of your education is one of the requirements.

With this in mind, you can still apply for the CES report which does not necessary require a license. However, some state boards still require that you hold a license from your country, so you should call the Massachusetts board and find out if they do.

OK this is what is stated on the MA website

Education and English Proficiency Requirements

1. To meet the Board’s educational requirements for certification, you must be a graduate of:

• a senior secondary school education (high school) that is separate from nursing education; and

• a government-approved, general nursing program that provided theory and clinical education which, in the

opinion of the Board, maintains standards substantially the same as those required for approval of a

registered nursing education program in Massachusetts and which program is approved by the nursing

board or corresponding body in the jurisdiction where the program is located.

Registered Nurse (RN): You must be educated and hold licensure in good standing as a “first-level,

general” nurse (International Council of Nurses).

• Practical Nurse (PN): You must be educated and hold licensure in good standing as a “second-level,

general” nurse (International Council of Nurses).

2. Graduates of a nursing education program whose language of language of nursing education (classroom

instruction, course textbooks, and clinical practice) was not English must demonstrate English proficiency before

writing the NCLEX.

Provide supporting documentation. Complete one of the following:

• CGFNS Qualifying Examination Certificate with CGFNS emboss (RN licensure only); or

• VisaScreenTM Certificate with International Commission on Health Professions emboss (RN licensure

only); or

• CGFNS Credentials Evaluation Services (CES) Report, including both the Nursing and Science

Course-by-Course Report and License/Registration validation option, with CGFNS emboss (RN and

PN licensure) or a Credential Evaluation Service (CES) Report posted at the CGFNS website for PCS

access.

I personally would go with CES as only a small handful of states actually require CGFNS exam and as mentioned you have to be licensed in your own country. Also MA appears to ask for license anyway but may be worth emailing or ringing them explaining the situation and asking if the license can be waivered
