You have until it's time to renew your license. So you could in theory wait until the last week/days. In Florida there's statement that when we renew we are professing we have our CEU's.
What happens then depends on the board themselves, so you should ask them. In theory I suppose they could not renew your license if you answer "no I don't have my required CEUs" when you review.
In this day of instant CEUs on the internet is there really an excuse not to have them?

I've known of people who waited until the last minute and had to scramble to get their CEU's. I agree with Tweety, why wait?
In Texas, you also state that you have the required ones. You don't have to send any documentation. However, you could be audited at any time. Why take a chance?

I have only been a nurse for a year, and I am told we have to have CEUs before we renew our licenses. I have taken many things because I wanted to improve on my practice, and also, school information, while helpful, was not abbreviated with the main points I needed to know to function. I needed 'main points' to remember. I would not wait until the last minute. However, I know of many nurses that were able to actually renew with nothing. Heck, if life gets me by and I can get away with it, why not? But, I will get infection control, and the main things on time.
Thank you for your replies. I guess since I have zero experience outside of clinicals with this, Im just wondering. Am I right to assume licensing is for a year?
Im actually excited about it and I love our 'allnurses' board where we are surrounded by friends so thought i would ask here. There is so much i want to do w/nursing.
WHERE do you find out about what is available? I happened to be in a local community college and saw they had a few things. Then i thought if i didnt happen in, i never would have known about this.
Here in Florida licensure lasts two years.
I've gotten much of my CEU's at work through various workshops offered there. I've taken some online at Nursing Spectrum http://www.nurse.com/ce/. There are many many many ways to get CEU's online, through various workshops and conferences, colleges, etc. Just google "nursing ceu's" and see what pops up.
thank you :)
I still havent taken the NCLEX so it is good to know the clock starts ticking once I do.
