Cedars-Sinai

Hello California! :lol2:

I'm wondering if any of you can give me any advice on Cedars, specifically L&D there? I'm considering a summer contract there, and I'm wondering about the work atmosphere. I searched this forum and found some older posts stating that Cedars isn't the best place for new grads (apparently they are not the best at taking new grads under their proverbial wings), but I am an experienced L&D nurse and WHNP. Still, I would prefer not to work in a "cold" environment. Anybody have any thoughts/experience on the L&D department there, or the hospital in general?

Thanks in advance!

I recently received an offer for a position in Cedars L&D new grad training program and am trying to decide whether or not to accept it. I too have heard that cedars is not the best hospital for welcoming or supporting new grads. However, everyone I met on this unit seemed quite friendly and nice when I was there. The way I figure it, the nursing staff is quite large there so its got to have at least a handful of really great nurses that would also be really great coworkers. You just need to figure out who those really great people are. The unit itself appeared very spacious with tons of great technology.

If anyone else has heard anything else about cedars L&D or has worked there themselves, I'd love to hear your thoughts too. Thanks!

It's a pretty interventive hospital birth wise... my one experience there was not so great.

I hadn't been able to find any info on their C/Section rate. They do require contractors in L&D to have ACLS, which seemed a bit odd to me. That typically means they expect to handle their own codes within the unit staff, or the hospital is too small to have a code team. In some cases, they just want you to have ACLS so they know they're getting highly-trained staff, even though they don't expect you to use it. But I can't help but wonder how many codes they expect the staff to have to handle in L&D....

it's far from small.

my bet is the latter...

and it's got a HIGH c section rate too. so much so I know one woman that was trying to book her scheduled c section and couldnt' get the week she wanted so the Dr. scheduled her an "emergency c section" for a sunday eve. WHAT IS UP WITH THAT???

That's what I'm thinking too...

I cannot speak directly to the work environment. I'm a nursing student, wife of someone who works at Cedars, and someone who has delivered 3 children there. I do know it is a nice physical atmosphere with a very medical-model perspective towards labor and delivery. Nearly everyone gets an epidural, and the C-Section rate is in the 30s I think. In town it is known as the interventionist hospital. Scheduling of births for convenience is commonplace. Also, my husband says that since Cedars is a place many nurses want to work, they don't offer "goodies" like incentives, bonuses, or even very good insurance for their nurses or go out of their way to make it a nice place to work.

That said, I hope to work there someday-just not in L&D!
