This October I will be eligable to become a CCHP. I would appreciate any input, be it advice, tips, or just comments.
Thanks in advance!

I have just recertified this year with NCCHC for the second time. If you have a copy of the standards of care for prisons, jails, and juvenile facilities, you have a good start. If not I suggest you get them and have them open for the test. There are no 'technical nursing'questions per se. They are all mostly ethics questions. 10 really hard essay questions and a lot of multiple choice. I found out after I took the test that there is a publication which addresses the questions more appropriately, but I don't know where to tell you to get it. My supervisor, who is a CCHP showed it to me after I completed the test and sent it in. it's a small paperbacked book and I can't rememeber the name.
I feel the material I was exposed to as a result of studying for the test has made me more aware of ethics regarding care to inmates, and I had been in corrections for 12 years.
The continued resourse materials such as the quarterly journals and the 'news papers' that I recieve have definately made me a better caregiver, besides helping with delemas I've encountered over the years.
Good Luck

I just took my CCHP in June and waiting for the results to come back from the NCCHC. I read the messages about the publications that you need for the test, the NCCHC has all the publications, inculding all the standards books and the other publications all together in a package that you can buy to take the test with. Our institution bought the set for us, then more than one person can use them and they also have the standards books to use in the facility. You might ask your boss to purchase them for you before anyone else takes the test. They can also be purchased on line at www.ncchc.org. Good luck Sonya
Just to let you all know. I did receive my CCHP and have joined the large group of correctional nurses that have added that to thier resume. Sonya Sallee RN CCHP
