Does anyone here work as a Casual? Whats it like, do you like it? How many hours do you/can you work per week? is it your only job?

I interviewed to work at a Psychiatric Institution (WPIC) as a Casual and the RN told me that there is always a need for casuals to pick up shifts at that hospital. I dont have any other job I am a student 3 days a week.

I do work casual aka PRN and love it. I must work only 1 shift in 6months to stay on. That is not a problem at all. On average I will pick up 2 shifts a week. I have the option to pick up 12, 8 or 4hr shifts. I can keep as busy as I want because somebody always wants time off for something. I can pick up either nurse shifts or aide shifts . I get PRN RN pay regardless, but do not get merrits ,PTO, holiday pay, nor insurance. However I get shift diffs & IPERS. (State of Iowa retirement plan ). I do not have another job besides being a wife and mother of 3.

I work PRN/Registry/Casual and love it as well. I am obligated to four 8 hours shifts per 4 week schedule. I can usually pick up more because the other nurses usually want someone to cover a shift or part of a shift for them. I can work 4, 8, or 12 hour shifts. I still get shift differentials as well as holiday pay though I do not get any benefits such as PTO or health insurance. It works perfectly for my lifestyle.

I work casual and love it. Although I do not get health benefits or vacation days I do make more money then the other charge nurses and I can work the shifts I want. I can also work as a CNA and make my pay for it. I only pick up aide work when I can't get enough hours but that doesn't happen often. It is nice working as an aide because I don't have all of the responsibilities and when working as a Charge Nurse I don't listen to the aides complain because I do it also.

thanks guys :)
