Career Clean Up

Here is my situation. I worked for one year with a mega health care system. I found out my former manager wont give me a good recommendation or communicate with me. I have a 4 month gap in employment on paper. I have now been doing home health for a little over a month now and kind of want to run the floors again at a big hospital and see if I can play the game better and build a better career. How would you guys suggest I go about doing this? I am also about halfway through NP school, so I really don't know if I should just try to create the best possible work situation for me to be successful in NP school i.e. shorter commute and day shift work. In the end a NP can provide better for their family than a RN...just saying but there is still part of me that wants to be a good hire anywhere I apply. All opinions are greatly appreciated.

How much longer do you have left in your NP schooling?

If that time is less than a year, I would not contemplate looking for work outside of what you are doing now. Hiring someone and orienting them that will be self sufficient for say 9-10 months before they move into a different clinical role isn't exactly thrilling to a manager.

Is medical surgical nursing where you want to be post NP school? Are you doing acute care as part of your specialization? Is this going to advance your career to where you want to be in 5 years?

These are all very important questions that you need to ask yourself, do not go into a new facility because you have something to prove. Things happen for a reason, if medical-surgical nursing did not work out for you in the past, chances are they will not work out for you in the future.

My suggestion is to remain with your current employer for a minimum of two years, even if you are not working the acute care hospital position you want.

The straightforward reality is you have already worked at two different hospitals. Both of those chances were blown. You now have the chance to shine in home health.

Bloom where you are currently planted. You have a lemon, so turn it into a glass of lemonade. Make the best of what you currently have. Thrive in home health.

Good luck to you!

You already posted that you've had 5 jobs in 2 years. If you want to clean up your career, you need to stay at a job. You are currently working; why not just stay where you are and get that longevity that you need?

This. Again.
