Cardiac to OB??

Hello,

I will be finished with nursing school in April next year and would REALLY like to do OB. However, those jobs are pretty hard to come by around here especially for new grads. My second choice is probably cardiac, but I was wondering if it would be dificult to transition to OB, if I get the chance, after having that experience. Would med-surg be a whole let better? I just really am not interested in med-surg, but if it would increase my chance of getting into OB I might be able to tough it out.

Any insight would be appreciated!

I went from ER to OB. My skills from ER have helped esp. foley caths and IV starts.

Having moved right after nursing school, I also missed the opportunity to get a LD residency so I took the ER one. Then I moved again. I got lucky to find a hospital that was training new nurses in OB.

My thougths are that the first year in nursing is really just figuring out your nursing practice. I spent 10 months on a telelmetry unit fulltime & PRN in a little county ER then I went to L&D. The experience was invaluable, I felt I was able to concentrate on the OB part since I wasn't learning the nursing part in conjunction with it. I'm also more comfortable with out of the ordinary situations than the nurses who came straight to L&D with me (this is based on conversations with those nurses and other coworkers.) I know it is so cliche and you here it from everywhere but that time really was valuable. I had wanted to go to a hospital with lots of high risk and sick OB patients so I could learn both at the same time but I didn't even get an interview there so I didn't dwell on it and decided to keep my eyes open for other opportunities.

I went straight into PP after graduation and now I have been doing L&D. Experience in med/surg, cardiac, ER is great experience. But I like what I like and don't want to work anywhere else, even if it would be good for me. I feel I get to brush up on my skills when I get pulled to the other floors. Once in a blue moon is enough for me. And I will also say nurses who work on the other floors can whoop my butt any day of the week, I can catch a baby without getting any baby goo on my scrubs. :)
