Can one really work as an LPN during blocks 3 & 4?

Hey folks,

I posted this question in the general nursing forum, but it seems that many states don't allow nursing students to sit for the LPN after block 2.

So - for the Arizonans in the house - is it realistic to work as an LPN during blocks 3 & 4? I'd love the experience (I've worked as a CNA, phelbotomist, ER tech, lab tech, and HUC for 5+ years), and I need to keep my benefits while in school. I have heard how difficult the 1st year in nursing is and wonder if it is possible to be a new grad LPN and a RN student at the same time.

For those who have done/considered it..is it possible? Thanks in advance!

I worked as an LPN extern during block 4. At the most I only worked one 12 hour shift a week. I worked for the experience.....not the money. Eventhough I got my LPN after block 2; I never officially worked as and LPN. I went to Glendale and I don't know anyone in the full time program that worked full time as an LPN. It is doable......but it will almost kill you.

I didn't do the LPN option, but a lot of people from my class did-and then are grateful that they did. One friend of mine got a job as a LPN in her ER, and then got her RN. Now she is in my critical care course, with a year's experience in the ER already. You can't beat nursing experience.

I worked full time the whole time in nursing school. Not only is it do-able, but beneficial, because you can apply so much of what you've learned to real situations.

yikes, no way for me. but a lot of people in my classes do. i'm in my 4th out of 5 blocks, and i'd say a quarter of the students are employed as nurse externs at several hospitals around the valley. also, now that we took the HESI PN, those of us that passed and choose to may sit for the NCLEX-PN and work as LPNs while in school. a few of my friends are doing that, but i've found that living on loans and health care through COBRA are pretty much the only way i could get through this with my head intact.

i'm absolutely exhausted as it is....

I've met one guy who used to work to 16's (0700-2300) every weekend while he was in school (as a new LPN). He said it was rough, but he learned a lot!! Keep the replies coming!!!

Now, if I could only get in to nursing school.....(wait lists stink!!)
