i am a male nurse >>> for a 7 years ... i work as icu staff nurse

now due to the shortage of the staff we are handling 2 of the most critical cases known in medical filed. we being force by administration of the hospital to handle tow cases : mean : the ratio is 1:2 its not simple cases its the most busy and critical cases we are working for 8 hours in 3 shift and we cant face the administartion because we dont build our refusal response in offical or logic reasons expt that they mention in thir policy the ratio is 1:1

i want to konw of the international policy ist allowed to handle 2 patient vented-restlease-and supporitive managment over hours

i feel i want to leave icu but i love my work as icu staff>>>> specialy we work for 6 days a week for one day offfffffffffffffffffffff in

honestly icu nursing is one of the most intense nursings next to the er......... & maternity........... and the pacu............. & the or......

it sounds like you have "burnout", which happeneds... maybe you need to go to the er or another unit that will appreciate your skills & give you a breather from the icu............

sounds like you need a stress reliever............ do you have a written contract to work more than 40 hrs a week?

mandatory overtime?

i don't understand how they can work you 6 days with only 1 day off? where do you live?

uk rules are so different from out usa rules, we have set standards as far as the hospitals or the place where you work, i know in the telemetry icu, our nurses have 2 patients each, in the neonatal icu they are 1:1 in my area, but have had an extra baby at times but not for an extended period of time.

i guess every icu is different.

we work 48 hours if we are day duty or Pm duty and 58 hours if we r night duty.

and one day offffff and our duty is not dealing with time its dealing with pateint needs or condition .e.g if patient had CT or US or any procedure u will not go till you will finish your work .either practice or papers works . i am getting psycho due to my duty the problem is no break time in the duty and no one help in the unit i mean we have 24 patient evry nurse has 2 PT and will mange by her/himslf you cant imagine a lot of vicitmes of patieno poor of care they get due to the shortage of the staff >>>> and the staff they are fighting weith each other and more probelms betwen them due to that

so you are telling me that a work week is 48 hrs mandatory, and days & evenings & 58 per week if you work nights?

you don't have any governing body that will stand up for the employees? nursing board? laws about a work week? no mandatory break time? 15 min 1st break 30min lunch 15min 2nd break? none of these things are mandatory? at your facility?

i can appreciate the need to finish your work before you leave but there are more than 1 shift & here in the states, if tests didnt get completed than the next shift picks it up! i guess you have a tough situation, if there is no government to back you up, is it like this in the whole area where you work? or just the facility you work in?

i am sure there is alot of fighting w/ staff since they are all over worked as you are..

i wish i had answers for you !! but it seems that your facility is run quite a bit different than in the states: our week week is 40 hrs anything over that is overtime pay, we get 15min morning break 30 lunch break 15 min afternoon break, of course if there is an emergency our breaks get cut short.. but we are not denied breaks.. and we get extra pay for working more than 40 hrs...

you should see a vacation? do they allow you to take those? you are burning out rapidly & your patient care will be affected without a doubt!!

if you can go to another facility where the working conditions arent so harsh i would , if not,, you need to soul search & find out if you can handle this for much longer........... sounds like they are abusing their staff to the breaking point...
