Calculations Questions

Published

Hi, I was given this question as a practice example. I'm a wee bit rusty. Could someone help me with this one.

You are required to give 300 micrograms. The ampoule contains 1:5000 solution in five mls. How much are you going to give?. Would someone kindly set this out step by step. :saint: A angel prehaps. I already know 1: 5000 is 1 gram in 5000 mls. Do I need to convert the 300 to grams?

You are asked to give 20 grams iv. You have a bottle of 5%. What volume are you going to infuse?

5% = 5 grams per 100mls. Going infuse 400 mls. Is that right? Thanks for any help:Melody:

Hi, Everyone. I have this example question-drug calculation. Could someone shed some light on it-the steps of working it out.

You are required to give 300 micrograms.

The ampoule contains 1: 5000 in 5mls.

How much are you going to give?

The answer I got was 0.3 ml.

I first converted 300 micrograms to grams.

1: 5000 = 1gram in 1000mls so the answer is 5 grams.

300 divided by 1000 = 0.3

0.3 times 5 = 1.5

1.5 divided by 5=0.3

Is this correct-I need some guidence.:saint:

hi,beetle!

you are required to give 300 micrograms. the ampoule contains 1:5000 solution in five mls. how much are you going to give?

i may be a little rusty on this, but i do believe that the 1:5000 ratio means that 5 ml of solution contains 1 mg of drug (or there is 1 gram of solid in 5 liters of liquid), not 1 gram per 5ml. someone please correct me if i am wrong about this. therefore:

5 ml
/
1 mg
(dose on hand)
x
1 mg
/
1
000 mcg
(conversion factor)
x
300 mcg
/
1
(dose desired)
=
1.5 ml
(amount to give)

you are asked to give 20 grams iv. you have a bottle of 5%. what volume are you going to infuse?

missing information here, so i can't complete the problem for you. your bottle of medication is how much of a 5% of what? more information is needed. as it stands, it's too vague.

please check out the nursing student forums on allnurses. here is a listing of them: https://allnurses.com/forums/f196/. you will find questions on drug calculations answered on the nursing student assistance and general nursing student discussion forums. welcome to allnurses! :welcome:

hey all, dunno if this will help but i use the equation - what you have want divided by what you have got x what it is in.
