CA Nursing Board issues

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a foreign Nurse and passed NCLEX RN from Colorado Board. I have to transfer my Liscence to California board since I have to move out to California. I applied for transfering the license but they asked me to take Psychiatric nursing course. It is very interesting that I have couple of friends who came with me from same college. They did not have to take the course but I have to. I tried to talk to CA board of Nursing but they don't want to talk to me. I would not mind to take the course but most of the colleges do not offer the course for foreign nurses any more or they are pack for couple of years. Does anybody know why CA board of Nursing evaluates differently for the students of same school? Is there anybody who can listen me and understand the problem?

Thank You in Advance

This exact same thing happened to me, but the difference is I am educated in Canada, graduated from a major University. They told me that I had not even completed a psych course or clinical, and that I needed to complete one. Problem was, I did complete it in nursing school. I went back to my school to make sure my transcripts were complete, and they were, so I got them to send them again, as well as send the "course breakdown" paper again. Eventually I think the CA board got everything. I have no Idea what the problem was, or what they were missing, because it was only they psych component they "didnt have". Then a few months later, miraculously, all my stuff was fine and I had my temp permit. They are very hard to deal with. I found the easiest way to get ahold of them, was to deal with them through a travel nurse company, as they often have "inside contacts". It took me a good 7 months to finally get my temp. permit. This could be the problem, if you went to the same school as your coworkers, and they had no problems.

If you already had a psych course, it may have to do with your score for that course when you took your boards. Different states sometimes have different "grade numbers" that they will accept, so, even though you passed the boards where you took them, maybe your score in psych wasn't quite high enough for CA. Perhaps your other classmates scored higher than you and thus no need for them to re-take the course to practice in CA.

GOOD LUCK
