Between Kaplan and Hurst

Published

I'm one of the pyschos who are using both, yes both. I signed up for Kaplan because it was part of my school. While I was enthusiastic at first I was quickly let down by the fact that a majority of the material was showing me how to eliminate and "guess" based on the decision tree. That's fine and dandy but I feel like my weakness is lack of content. I must have stored a lot of info from nursing school in my short term memory because a lot of subject I felt like I was reading for the very first time!

So I signed up with Hurst Review. I'm doing the online review and half way through the videos. So far I'm loving the lectures! Marlene is amazing at breaking everything down to simple knowledge. The downside is that as I'm talking through the material like she wants me to, I'm doing it with a Southern accent. :lol2:

What do you guys think? I'm still only half way through hurst so I'm especially interested in how you feel Hurst has helped you pass the Nclex.

I havent taken either of the courses, but based on the books they have to accompany the studying, the hurst review really does seem to go over the core content of what you need to know for the exam and the questions in the back are so much more detailed in my opinion.... ps i take the nclex in a few days but the hurst book seemed so much more helpful to me when i read through it even a few chapters

I attended the Live Hurst Review as well as bought the Kaplan 2011-2012 review book. Since content is your weakness, definitely focus on what Hurst has given you. Review those videos as often as you can and go through the worksheets as well. After I attended the live review, I also bought the online supplement, which is the same as what you are doing now.

My schedule was as follows:

-Attended the 4-day live review and completed workbook (you have this too as well)

- Watched the videos 2x each until I was able to say what Marlene was saying before she said it.

- Read through my workbook 3x and more for content that I was not completely clear on

- I did 3 of the 6 Q Reviews and scored 86/125, 92/125, and 89/125.

- Read Kaplan cover to cover and answered all the questions in that book, plus what was on the CD-ROM and scored really well with those.

Disclaimer: I only studied for 2 weeks after my Live review; my final week, I only did questions.

When I went to take my exam, I felt confident that I knew what I was doing and I even heard Marlene's voice in my head as I was answering questions. I passed my NCLEX last Thursday with exactly 75 questions (1 exhibit, 7 SATA, and the rest MC).

Since I utilized both Hurst and Kaplan, I can honestly say they both helped me equally. I wasn't really weak on my core content, but Marlene put lots of stuff into perspective for me. Kaplan questions to me are very similar to NCLEX questions and I feel that some, not all of there strategies helped me on the the test.

Good Luck with your studying and don't forget to pray. Hurst has all the info that you need to pass the NCLEX the first time. Utilize your time wisely and focus on your weaknesses and not your strengths. Also when answering questions, make sure you review the rationales for both the right and wrong answers.

I hope this helps you some!! You'll do great!!!

Congrats!!! I look forward to coming here and telling you that I passed too!

I look forward to hearing back from you as well!!!:yeah:You'll do great :)

Stick with Hurst and visit Kaplan as you have time, so as not to waste your money. You will do just fine. Good luck.

Hey guys, I'm quite new to this site. I just took my exam today. I tried the PVT and it lead me to my cc info. I was wondering if the PVT is really the true predictor that I either passed or failed. I'm praying that I did not fail... Just in case, I am trying to figure out how to register for the Kaplan review course. I took hurst as a prep class and thought it was good for content. Please help! Oh and congrats to you HappyMeNow and KelG_RN!

@Joe17: thnx... i'm praying really hard that i did pass. i was wondering though from what you have seen on this thread, what would be the "best" review class out there? i took hurst and thought it was good for content, but from what i have seen on the test, the class didn't really help me. so i was thinking kaplan maybe?

I will pray that u pass my friend. I have Kaplan myself and I'm halfway through my lesson , questions are very difficult which help me rationalize but frustrate me becoz I get low scores decision tree I can only think that assessment bs implemantatiin work the rest don't. I heard that hurst are also a good one few friend here are on that and passed. Also with Kaplan. Try and gather more info which one is best depending on ur weakness and strength. I certainly advices u to get la charity it's very useful.
