Bedpan Blues

I have struggled for years with many issues using the Bedpan. It's truly a sort of art form. It's nearly impossible to help a patient use the bedpan without any spillage. Also, larger patients usually have even more issues with positioning and actually getting urine into the bedpan. Just venting here. I'd like to know about anyone else's struggles with the bedpan and how you cope with it.

I work with a CNA who puts a paper chux inside the bedpan. I thought it was strange the first time I saw her do it. But I guess it works. Of course you can't measure the urine (but you also can't if it's spilling over anyway). We also use powder around the edge to keep the pt from sticking to the pan. I'm not sure if hospitals provide powder anymore considering the issue with talc.

I'm terrible with bedpans. Fortunately I haven't had do deal with them really often and usually there were CNA'S nearby who took pity on me. I love my CNAS.

Unfortunately because of the above reasons I never got very good at not making a mess!

There are Youtube videos about using bedpans, but too often the patient is average weight and very compliant!
