I'm a circulating nurse and am thinking of growing a beard again, at least for the winter. I keep it trimmed pretty short, and may limit it to a goatee. Should this be a problem? One of our surgeons has a beard and he wears this full head cover, which I don't think I could tolerate. I don't recall anyone else with a beard in our OR. Naturally, I'll ask our OR admins if it's against policy.

you are right in asking facility policy. most around here want the facial hair covered, so if a mask can do it they don’t mind but if not, a full hood is required. surgeon preference has to also be considered, some will want a hood if any sign of a beard.
One of our top surgeons showed up for a case on Friday with the beginnings of his "winter beard" so I guess that answers my question

At our hospital beards need to be covered. There are very few people who have full beards. They wear the hoods and a mask. The ones who have a beard that can be covered by a mask (like a goatee), they just wear a mask. I don't think that's such a great practice though, because when they take off their mask, the facial hair is exposed anyway. I personally, will never grow a beard haha

LOL, I hear ya! I'm always puzzled when we get these older women who have beards and don't do anything about it. I guess it's admirable to be at peace with your appearance but there are options these days. I'm afraid to get old! Lady beards, hot flashes, and sagging bits. None of these things sound pleasant!
