i finally had a job interview today. first i had interview with human resources person then a nurse manager of the unit. i have no prior hospital experience but only worked in nursing home. during interveiw she said "i know you guys give lot of pills, what else do nurses do becuase i dont know". she sounded very sterotypic about working in nursing home. after interview was over, she didnt really say anything about checking reference or i'll be contacted in few days. i guess another failure huh? how many days do i have to wait to find out good or bad news?

Ouch. that was harsh. Maybe she has had prior bad experience hiring from Long term care. But really, on a lot of floors are.... old people are the ones having medical and surgical problems. I hope you were armed with all sorts of qualifications dealing with our aging population has given you.
Or maybe she already filled the job in her mind with someone else, and it didn't matter who you were, she was going to give you the brush off. Don't give up.

LTC is a hard job. You should be proud of your experience and be ready with examples of your duties such as supervising CNA's, wound care, assesments, time management etc... I would call them back to show you are interested. Showing confidence and pride in your work during an interview is important even if you don' feel it.

Haha I'm in the same boat.Had the interview yesterday, gave dumb answers to the interview questions and on top of that I could not meet face to face with unit manager because she was too busy!!!! The human resource person said that they will check my references (nursing instructors, previous caregiving job) and let me know in a week,I have bad feeling about my interview why would the manager of the unit be to busy to speak with me???

Next time bring up that you have experienced with the time management involved in taking care of 30+ patients at a time who are compramised. Also your experiences working with patients fresh from hospitals for rehab or whatever. Bring up difficult patient situations where your assesments have helped save your patients life and enabled them to go to a hospital.
Explain how you are seeking greater challenges and learning experiences by working at a hospital, talk about a clinical experience in school that was rewarding to you that made you want to be working in med/surg and how youve always wanted to but never given the opportunity.
good luck.
and ******** a little.
i hope it didnt sound offensive but i told nurse manager during interview that there are no physicians in the building and nurses have to assess patients and therefore i feel comfortable asessing patients.
since nurse manager didnt say anything about i'll be contacted in few days i know its a strong indication that shes not interested in hiring me but should i still send her a thank you note or should i just forget about it?

send the polite thank-you anyway. it's the polite and professional thing to do...and you never know--a nice thank-you note may either sway them into considering you further or help keep you in their mind for other positions that may open up.
