Average GPA

What is your average GPA? Do you know the average GPA for entry into a nursing program? What grades did you get in science classes? I heard that if you don't get an A in BIO201, BIO 202, BIO 205, you can not even get in. Is this true?

Glina, get in where? For the community colleges, generally you only need a C in pre-req classes to get on the waitlist. Although in Tucson you must have an average of a B for BIO 201 and 202 to get on the waitlist at Pima.

However, the BSN programs consider admission primarily based on GPA. It probably is fair to say that you need an A in all of those subjects to be considered for BSN admission. They say they emphasize biology GPA because that correlates greatly with success in the nursing programs. I'm not sure if they weight your biology GPA during computation for admission points, but I suspect adcoms at the BSN programs do.

I have maintained a 4.0 GPA because it makes me feel safe. I think I talk about it on the board because in real life it is rude to talk about GPA somewhat, and I need to talk about my GPA stress somewhere! It's kind of like boasting about your bank account or credit report. Kind of. You don't do it in person.

From what I have heard over the last year and a half - you need at least a 3.7 GPA to get in to the BSN programs unless you bring an unusual characteristic to the table such as being an under-represented minority group. In addition, things like healthcare volunteer experience and work experience count a great deal.

Are you looking at ADN programs or BSN programs? Thing is, you need get on the waitlist to wait to start the ADN programs. While ADN programs give you the ability to get accepted to the nursing program with C grades, I'm not sure if that bodes well for success the nursing program. You need to have the ability to do better than that to be successful in an ADN program from what I've heard.

You can't even get on the ADN waitlist until you're in your final pre-req semester, and then you're only on it in a provisional status, you don't even go to active status until you've finished ALL of your pre-req's.

If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of this - just get started on your intitial classes. Frankly I'm glad I had no idea what I was getting into when I quit my former life and became a full-time student in order to become a nurse. If I had known all that I would have to do - I would have become a librarian instead, LOL. That would have been a shame.

I'm really glad I didn't know what it would take either, or I may not have gone into nursing. I already had a BS degree when I started and figured, hey, nursing school is only two years!! I didn't really take into account the pre-req's for the pre-req's for the pre-req's etc. and the wait list. Luckily I only sat out one semester and was able to take my co-req's while waiting so when I got into nursing school I've only had to concentrate on the classes :lol2: . I'm really glad I went into this field though. I also NEVER thought I'd want to end up in L&D, in fact, I thought that might be the last place I end up in, but here I am and I LOVE it!! So a lot changes during this whole process, but it's a lot of fun along the way and you meet some great people!! :monkeydance:

I think I am well informed, unfortunately LOL. In my previous Thread, I was referring to ADN and CC wait list. Yeah, I think the best strategy is to concentrate on the current classes. If I ever go to the wait list, I am sure I will have to wait at least 4 semesters because my plan is to go to nursing school part time. I think that only Gateway and GCC have part time options.
