Applying for UH Manoa Fall 2012

Published

Hello,

I am currently a Pre-Nursing student planning to apply soon for UH Manoa's BSN Program for Fall 2012. I had a few questions regarding NLN scores, cumulative GPA, & the admission (decision) process:

First of all, I just re-took my NLN today at Maui CC (yes, I had to fly over since UHM was booked for the rest of the year) and it was computer based so my scores were not yet in the online system. The first time I took my NLN was in October of this year at KCC, so basically that's the loophole that most UHM pre-nursing students don't realize, that you can register for BOTH KCC and UHM NLN's since UHM is computer-based and won't track if you already took paper-based at KCC. But anyways, the first time I took my NLN, I got my scores in and for the "ALL" column my percentiles were Verbal 49, Math 91, & Science 85. I was really bummed when I found out I got a "49" for Verbal and the MINIMUM is "50." So, I went to the nursing office in Webster 201 and spoke with a lady (not sure what her name was) but I showed her my scores and she told me that they will not necessarily "X" or disregard you out of the application/competitive pool completely but rather give you lower points for that Verbal score. And she told me for example, they'll give you 2 points for that 49, 8 points for that 91, and 5 points for 85, theoretically speaking. She also explained that if I had a 45-48 score, she would NOT consider it because 49 is considered to be there but not quite. That in reply was such a relief for me. But then, I asked if I should retake it at Maui since there is that loophole that most students don't realize so she advised me to do so and I did, which I just got out of today. However, couple days later I also wanted to validate what that lady said and hopefully speak with Brian, who is one of the main folks that assess the applicants; but everytime I try to talk to him he's always busy or the receptionist intends to answer my questions. So, I asked her to look at my NLN scores once more and surprisingly, she tells me different, that my score is unacceptable for that Verbal 49 and they won't consider it at all again. I really do not think she's apart of the application process, assuming she looks like a student but I was really shocked she told me that because this other lady told me otherwise. But anyways, I took my second NLN today and UNFORTUNATELY, my scores this second time around was Verbal 49 (:crying2:), Math 92, & Science 85. I was so speechless.. So, I called the nursing office right away and to my surprise, that same girl picked up the phone from the last time and told me the same thing. I emailed Brian afterward asking if I could set up an appointment with him but he didn't get back to me yet so I'm hoping and praying that he does soon towards this matter since I'm getting mixed responses from different people. With that said, I was just wondering if anyone had ANY clue as to if my scores or rather yet my APPLICATION is still considered despite that 49 Verbal and if I should still turn in my application with that 49? I truly believe my Math and Science scores could make up or compensate for it anyhow, but then again, this is one of Hawaii's prestigious nursing schools. ALSO, I am confident in my prereq gpa, anticipating for a prereq GPA of 3.9, and a cumulative of at least 3.5.

Now, this leads me to another question on cumGPA. I am a transfer student from LA; went to school in LA for Pre-Nursing as well. How is cumGPA calculated in terms of transfer students? & what classes do they look at SPECIFICALLY towards this GPA? Because I've taken an anatomy course at this institution at LA my first year. Didn't pass it with a D. The second time around I got an A for both lecture and lab. Oh, and on the transcript this anatomy course transfers as PHYL 141/141L. But anyways, will they factor in failed courses too? Because some of my nursing friends told me that whatever is necessary for the pre-nursing application process will count towards the app and ALSO, as a transfer student, our GPA is 0.00 once we start at Manoa or the UH system, is that true? So technically, I'm on a clean slate. I need some clarification with that.

Please let me know ASAP! ANYONE! I'm hoping and praying for Fall 2012, I just know my heart is in nursing. I've already been denied twice at my previous institution due to failed courses but managed to pick myself up.

Hi! So, i can't answer all of your questions but your situation seems similar to mine when I applied the first time. I am also a transfer from a cali school. So I took the nln and I received verbal 49 math 99 science 99. I took it at UH so I got my scores immediately. The proctor who is a nursing adviser told me to apply anyway even though my verbal score was shy of the 50. So I went ahead and applied for Fall 2011. I had a 4.0 pre-req and 3.3 cum. I applied to only UHM and I got rejected. I went in for a consultation and the advisor told me I was not even considered due to my 49. I was confused because the advisor had told me after I got my nln scores to just apply anyway. Had I had known I would not even be considered I wouldn't had applied. In my mind I think that depending on what their pool of students looked like i would pooossibly have been able to be considered. Anyways, I went ahead and decided I would take the nln again and just hope for the best. I too flew to maui cc. I basically only studied the verbal workbooks. I reeeeally struggle in english. I ended up getting a verbal 79 math 99 science 97. I reapplied for Spring 2012 but this time I applied to both KCC and UHM. I got my KCC letter first and I was put on a waitlist, then took off and accepted (someone who was accepted declined) and then I was accepted to UHM.

You should definitely go in for advising to clear up all of your questions so you know you are hearing indefinite answers. On the forum you can see general scores on the nln, cum gpa, and pre-req gpa but it also depends on the pool of applicants that you are applying with and how you line up next to them. If I were you I would retake the nln (study verbal like crazy), retake pre-req classes at UHM or a CC and get A's. Also, KCC takes into account experience so you should try to volunteer or get any work experience or shadowing possible. This will also help you to network and learn hands on. I know it's stressful but if it's what you really want to do you should go for it!!!!! I hope that was somewhat helpful.

Also, look through previous threads. There's lots of helpful info.

@francobeano, Oh wow, so they actually did reject you! I'm surprised because your math and science were excellent the first time and your GPA's as well! Congrats to you, though!

But anyways, since you are a transfer student? did your cumGPA from your cali school transfer over too or just the credits? Cuz if so, I'm worried because I don't think my cumGPA will be high. I heard our GPA's rest to 0.00 as transfer students.

ALSO, how did you study and prepare a second time for the verbal section?

I'm not too sure about the transfer gpa but i'm pretty sure it's uhm credits only. I took a year of classes before I decided to apply for nursing so I had credits. My KCC credits and transfer credits were not incorporated into my cum gpa otherwise it would have been a lot higher.. (i was stupid and took a summer course in my freshman year and got a D). Since you have this semester off pretty much, I would think you should retake pre-req classes you did not get A's in at uhm and get A's in them which would raise your cum and pre-req gpas. I just studied the practice tests over and over again and try to read the newspaper or anything.. i'd say I worked on techniques to eliminate answers for each question.. def look into prefixes, suffixes.. things like that.. the work book practice tests will help you familiarize with the question types and common words. When I got rejected the first time I was very discouraged but if you know nursing is what you want to do, i'll reiterate it again.. don't give up! Also go in for your advising as you will get answers you need directly from advisors so you don't have to rely on word. Best of luck to you!!!!!

Hi I looked at the nursing application and it says that they factor in transfer credits into your gpa and the last time I applied they factored in the KCC credits.

"Minimum cumulative grade point average (G.P.A.) of 2.5 in all transferable college/university credits "

hey how did you improve on your verbal? that is amazing going from 49 to 79! i have no problem on science and math but verbal is very difficult for me being that english is not my first language. i got a 49 as well and it broke my heart. i struggle in english too but i'm very amazed by your improvement in verbal and wondering what workbooks you used to improve? pls give me any kind of tips. i have to take the nln again in three months. i want a score like yours.

Just keep trying. I have a 144 NLN, a biology degree from UH and over 2 years direct patient care in a healthcare setting and I still haven't received that acceptance letter. :( I did make the wait list for UH and KCC but after many applications. You just gotta keep trying. Good luck.
