Applying to New Grad Programs without a license

Published

Hi, I am graduating in June 2009 and will be taking the NCLEX in mid June. There are some new grad programs I am interested in that have application deadlines in early March for programs that begin in the Summer. With the poor economy and a lot of new grads with licenses still looking for jobs, should I still apply even though I have not completed my preceptorship, graduated, or taken nclex? Any advice would help :)

I think it depends on the facility. Some places will accept an IP as long as you have your license by a certain time and some just want the license. If you can apply, just go for it and test as soon as you can.

yes. do it.

while you're at it, get your ACLS and PALS certifications (don't wait on these, do them now if you can), join professional organizations for the field you want to specialize in.

I'm a new grad, with a license. I'm kicking myself in the butt for not applying to new grad programs. Now I'm considering taking a job as a PCA/CNA at the facilities I want to apply as a new grad to just to get my foot in the door.

Good luck, it's tough out there.

If you hold a license as a nurse in this state, then you are not going to find any facility that will be willing to hire you for any other role. When you are licensed, you are held to that level of responsibility.

Depends where in the state first of all. Things are quite tight right now, and facilities are going to go first with those that hold a license when the program starts. We are also seeing many new grad programs cut back or cancel out.

I would honestly tell you to look at other states as well right now, and do not count only on CA if you possibly can. There are way too many new grads for the number of new grad slots across the state.
