What a beautiful tribute, Grace........pardon my ignorance, but is Anzac Day like Veteran's Day here in the States? Please educate me! :)

Anzac day is the day Australians and New Zealanders remember and honour the brave men who landed at GALLIPOLI 90 years a go today, 25th April.

GALLIPOLI was in fact Australia's darkest hour and we lost so many young men in that battle. ANZAC DAY is almost a sacred day for us Aussies. There are services of rememberance held right across the nation and marches through the cities and towns.

It might be similar to the American VETERANS DAY, someone might be able to clarify this. I somehow suspect it's not quite the same as we also have REMEMBERANCE DAY in November.

We are known as the only country in the world to celebrate a military defeat. And insight into that gives insight into our character as a nation. On this day we honour and remember those who have fought for us and those who have lost their lives. It is not a celebration but a recognition of sacrifice. It does go beyond that though, there is an akowledgment of mateship that can come through war. This is the only day that a game of "two - up" is legal.

Honouring a military defeat we are also saying - war might be neccessary but it is not always "glorious" or "valorous" it can be nasty and costly in terms of lives.

Grace - did you watch the ABC program "Letters from the War" last night?

No, Gwen, missed it. Would you believe I watched that mini series; "ANZACS"! Am still froming an opinion on that! *shakes head*

Has "Letters from the War" been on before? I seem to recall it sounds familiar and think I have seen it previously.

I started watching the miniseries but lost interest. The ABC Doco was superb - Showed both sides - Turkish as well. The Turkish presenter said that after one particularly savage battle when a great number of Turks were killed they heard this Australian voice ring out "See ya again next Saturday for another go!!" :chuckle Trust us Aussies!

Just thought I would post and say thanks, I have been in the Army for a while now and reading the last couple of post make me feel good about what I do. And just a few quick ones, ANZAC day whilst not the same as Veterans day still has the same meaning.

And ANZAC day started at Gallipoli, but now it covers, at least for us all the conflicts, all the wars. All the mates lost past and present, in peace and war. And also more importantly for the families those people have left behind.

It is a day to remember all the Aussi's and Kiwis, the mateship, and to remember just how good we as nations can get when the chips are down.
