Anyone Recommend Hurst to Help Before/During Nursing School?

I am starting my clinical portion of my BSN in the fall. I have this summer off, but I am interested in reading/studying/reviewing anything that will help me in the Fall. Nothing too crazy, but I just feel I do have some free time this summer, and if it helps me in the Fall it will be well worth it!

So far, most people that I have asked say, enjoy your time off! One person mentioned going over Pharmacology, they found it difficult in nursing and it carried over to every class and clinical. So I am currently looking for a book, that is a good introduction into Pharm. Hopefully, you will hear something from people that have been through it.

For me, its the fear of the unknown that bothers me, along with everyone saying how crazy hard and intense it is. I would feel better, if I could do something to better prepare myself. So far, I am reading over my A&P I and II book.

Here's my 2 cents. I know many people will say go for it and that it doesn't hurt to practice and study right away. But I say wait. If you haven't had any nursing classes, then you won't have enough background knowledge to answer the questions. You may just end up frustrating yourself and confusing yourself in the long run. I recommend you get NCLEX practice books, or Hurst, after you have had some nursing classes. Take a look at what classes you have next semester and study for those. Probably not what you want to hear but I think it is a very honest answer.

I took the Hurst Review the summer between my first and second years of nursing school. To me, it was like nursing school condensed into a week's worth of lectures. I'm glad I did it and would encourage any nursing student to sit for the review, even before completing nursing school. It helped me greatly. I was able to use the book as a study guide while in school. It gives you pretty much everything you need to know without all of the fluff. ...and besides, you're probably going to pay for a review anyway. With Hurst, you can take as many times as you want for a full year. I'll be doing Hurst again (for the 4th time) next week. I feel like the more I hear it, the more it will sink in. I think that's true even if you haven't had the material yet.

No, I really wouldn't recommend it as a nursing school prep. It's good to use while going through the program as a boost to understanding, but I really don't think it's something that is worthwhile without the foundations you'll get in your first semester of nursing school.
