First post here, so please go easy on me:lol2: have read through the forum many times and decided I should now join. Have a few questions for anyone accepted to Drexel's anesthesia program. I have been accepted for Jan of 09. I am going to start taking some of my core classes this january. Was wondering if anyone here is going through the program now, has been through the program lately, or will be going soon.
I am trying to figure out work load of the core classes so I can decide how many hours to drop down at work while taking 1 or 2 classes each semester and deciding in what order to take the classes.
feel free to PM me with any questions or answers
thanks.

Hi,
I have an interview at Drexel in December. I originally applied for 2009, but the interview is for 2008. Any pointers??

I applied for 09 and have an interview on 12/6, but am not really interested in drexel anymore since I was accepted elsewhere. The last few spots for 08 were filled at the interviews on 9/10 and as far as I know, there were only 3 spots anyway-and then they rolled everyone else over to 09. Usually you don't interview in December and then start the following month in January.
Tony- all the people in my unit work full-time or 72 and all of drexel's classes are online...towards the end of the core classes a few people have gone WIP and are trying to work through clinicals...they say they are doing well so far. It's crazy though, I can't imagine...they have kids too!

Jen, are you still going to the interview at drexel? If you know you are not going to accept if they offered you a seat in the program I would decline to give someone else a possible shot at getting it. Jen, you will be starting with a nurse from the unit i work in, possibly two if, the other person gets in.
KP,
thats strange that your interviewing this late for 08, jens right it is probably for 09, even if some people dropped out or deffered, i am sure they have a waiting list of potentials. that would be strange to interview someone this late for starting in 08.
as far as the interview goes.
know what the role of the CRNA is.
Why do you want to be a CRNA.
Why they should pick you over other applicants.
know hemodynamic monitoring
will ask you an ethical question.
will ask you 1 or 2 clinical questions.
will ask you what your strengths and weaknesses are.
i forget if there was anything else. show them that you are dedicated, that you really want to do this and you have researched it. they want someone who shows that they will be dedicated and has their life in order to deal with the rigors of an anesthesia program.
hope that helps.

Hi TonyCCRN,
I am an SRNA at Drexel's class of 09 (graduating in 09 that is). I love it and couldn't be happier. As far as the courses you need to take... It depends on how long you've been out of school. If recently and you are able to juggle, I'd say you don't have to drop shifts at work at all. You'll be able to do fine on two courses at a quarter (we are in quarter system now). I'd recommend that you take the following courses and get them out of the way as they are time consuming and tidious even if they don't seem like it from their names:
1. Introduction to Biostatistics
2. Methods for health research
3. Advanced pharmacology
4. Advanced ethical decision making
5. Issues in continuing health care environments
6. Advanced Physiology
What is difficult is when you are burning to read more and more anesthesia related material in order to survive in other courses you are doing stupid papers and case studies on ethics and discussion board postings. Be careful, however, in the pairing of these courses. You can't take 1, 2 at the same time. Physiology is a very tough course. So you may want to pair it with pharmacology perhaps. The pharmacology course isn't too bad. Biostatistics, ah, I wanted to jump across the computer screen and yell!!! It is not like the lovely undergrad statistics course with math that makes sense. Oh no!!! It is based on a computer software and just learning that takes forever. I ended up getting an A, but boy I was obsessing over it.
Let me know if you need any more info. I'd love to help.
:welcome:
Tony,
No I'm not even going to interview...I'm already scheduled to work that day and I just really like my program overall anyway. I just have had really hard times with drexel during this whole application process...I think they have a good rep etc, but haven't personally made me happy. I remember you saying one of the girls in the micu got into nova, but you never got back to me about who it was. PM me when you get a chance and let me know b/c chances are I know them since I was up there all summer for the internship. Take care, Jen

Applied to Drexel's program at Our Lady of Lourdes in NJ. Any feedback or suggestions for interview next week?
a few posts up is what was asked during my interview. relax and be yourself, they will expect some degree of anxiety and nervousness. if it is the same people that interviewd the group I was in. although they seem a bit intimidating, they are really nice people.
good luck.

They are interviewed at Our Lady of Lourdes, not by Drexel. So it is different group of people.

I will be starting Drexel in a few weeks. we actually start jan 3 and I am so excited.
RNNJ couldn't have been more correct...you do not want to be bothered with the tedious classes. They require a lot of annoying time doing papers and researching info, all of which is time consuming. I have already taken Research, Pharm, Confront Issues, and Advanced ethics. I wish I would have taken more classes but money was so tight. anything is better than nothing.
good Luck

Wow! Good job! You'll feel so much better when everyone else is trying to juggle all the courses, like me! I had only taken two. Now I have the two research courses left, "Methods for Health Research" & "Evidence Based Approaches". Were you guys sent the new program schedule yet? This means you are taking one less course your first quarter & fourth, two less courses your 7th quarter and one less your 8th quarter. Nobody's smarter!!!
yes, i only have three classes in jan, unlike my classmate that will have four.
who do you have for research? I still need to take biostats....
