Any RNs with a DUIs?

Published

Not looking for legal advice! Just trying to get a feel on what I can expect/ prepare for. I was charged with a dui and have NOT been convicted, court proceedings are still happening. I was in a one car accident, called the police myself, and injured at the scene so I was transported to the hospital. I am an OH RN. This is my first offense ever.

Just wondering what other RNs experiences are with being the process, what to expect with the board of nursing, and if you did or did not lose your license, receive suspension, etc.

thank you in advance!

Every state is slightly different. I got 2 last year and enrolled voluntarily in Knap which is a pain but worth it to keep my license. I’ve heard it’s better to do so in your own vs having it ordered by board but idk. I go to 2 AA meeting a week, monthly nurse meeting 3 hrs one way, daily checking for random ua, employee sends letter, turn in all meds I take for 3 years ughhhhh

This happened to me in 2015. It was my first offense. File a complaint against yourself to the Ohio BON. They already know you have been arrested anyways and its better to tell them yourself before they come hunt you down and ask why you have not reported your arrest. I got a letter from them to complete 6 hours of substance abuse CEU's and that was that. Really the only pain in the butt for you will be when you renew your next license because you need to report whatever you get charged with (for me a was a misdemeanor physical control - it got lowered to that from a DUI) and have all the supporting documents. Keep copies of everything! I did not report it to my current job. I had to have a letter of explanation for each other job I did (I did some travel nursing the past 3 years). Keep calm, get through your case, it will all be ok!

I'm really sorry you are going through the stress of this.

1. DO NOT REPORT ANYTHING TO TO BON.  Look up mandatory reporting requirements. Wrong timing.

If you are not guilty in your plea then you are innocent until proven guilty.

2. Get a really efficient attorney.  You would be surprised what a paid attorney can do.

3. Said attorney will promote the concept that your career will be destroyed. Ie suspension etc. Including u called cops yourself. ...demonstrates  moral turptitude.

4. Usually will  plea down to reckless operation.  Not BON reportable.

5. DO NOT ACCEPT PHYSICAL CONTROL CHARGE . That is reportable if no contest or guilty or diversion.

6. Ohio BON will also expect report within 30 days if you choose a diversion of criminal charges track EVEN if not guilty plea.

7. It must be plead down outside of anything substance related.

Hope that helps
