Any PD nurses here?

Published

I'm currenly working in chronic hemo. My boss recently approached me about the possibilty of me cross-training in PD. She said it would probably be two or three months before they get enough pts on PD to justify adding another PD nurse, though.

The one-on-one pt care, the teaching and the fact that it seems to be a much calmer form of nursing appeal to me.

PD nurses do have to take call, though.

Any nurses here gone from hemo to PD? What do you feel are the positives and negatives of PD? Do you enjoy it?

How does it compare to hemo?

Any special hints and tips you could share?

I'd love to hear from any PD nurses who'd care to share their thoughts!

I work in acute setting in Austin, Texas for National Nephrology Assoc. we do hemo, pd, and apheresis. When I came on board I didnt know anything about PD but was willing to learn and learn I did. We dont do alot of PD but it is a good break and it is really easy to do and learn. In the acute area the patients already know what to do so makes even easier. If you like to teach I would say go for it but the call might keep you up.

Hi Helllllo ! :)

Got your pm about PD, but I'll just respond here. I do like PD, I've only had very little opportunity to learn, though, as we only have like one patient currently on PD. I, too, love to teach, and always though it would be a nice added variety.

But until we get more PD patients, our DON still does our one patient when they come in for labs, etc. Perhaps someday.

Enjoy it ! I think you'll like it. Let me know how it goes ...;)
