AIDS orphans

I find it utterly phenomenal that Africa has up to 2,000,000 children orphaned from AIDS! This is truly a frightening number and I just thought I'd pass it on--also, in our micro class today, our instructor explained to us that yes, the HIV virus can pass through condoms...it's almost overwhelming: the spread, the havoc its wreaked, the lives its taken, its almost unstoppable power....I admire and respect all around the world who are doing their part for AIDS/HIV prevention, treating and teaching. I've done my part by being tested and encouraging my partners and friends to do the same.....It's easy to slough off these numbers of dead until you put a face on this hideous slaughter....and we will soon be able to quite easily if we don't do more to protect ourselves and others. Education and prevention is the main key here, as you all know. I hate to say it, but people need to stop waiting around for a miracle cure and get out there and SPREAD THE WORD----also, on a TOTALLY different subject, if anyone has any information on the nursing schools at Texas Tech or in Lubbock, please gimme a hollar----I need to start getting some things in order! Thanks!

It's truly horrifying to hear about Africa. With it's poverty, political instablity and corruption, it's so difficult to address.

I don't know how many of you had the chance to watch the Oprah show yesterday; it was a special on South Africa. It touched my heart to see the effects of the AIDS epidemic on millions of people...and those poor children. I was also very impressed with U2's Bono, who is doing so much to help with this plight. I don't have his money or influence, but Oprah listed a number where we could contribute one dollar to help. That number is 1-866-614-6664. If we all called and chipped in a dollar, perhaps we can make a small difference.

I watched the Oprah show yesterday, and I was moved to tears. I also watched the concert last night for World AIDS Day. You can also go to http://www.46664.com to make donations, or to buy 46664 merchandise. (46664 is the prisoner number that Nelson Mandela was issued during his incarceration). The proceeds from the merchandise sales also go to help the people of Africa. I ordered a coffee mug and a T-shirt. I really can't afford much right now, I won't graduate until May, but I figure any amount will be helpful.

I would like to point out that in Africa it is no longer an EPIdemic but ENdemic, it is a constant through out the population because of the prostitution and drugs. And that is a very sad thing. And this is an excellent cause.
