aging mother

Help!!! My 83 y/o mother alert and still driving, is loosing control of her bowels and urine both. She wears depends but will still be blind-sided with serious watery diarrhea. She gets regular colonoscopy and are normal. I have tried to get her to add more fiber to her diet and or use lomotil which the doctor has ordered but she is very reluctant to take meds. I am an RN but she will not listed to me. Does any one else have any ideas?

That is not unusual...she still wants to be" mom in control"..Won't she even follow her docs recommendations to add fiber to her diet? Metamucil (I think) makes a cookie- like fiber thing that actually tastes pretty good....Look for them...Convince her that it's food thing-she may be more receptive to that then a pill...Will she do bran in some form? You could look up some recipes on the net for bran bars...Plenty of good ones out there...

Yes. Don't clean up after her. When she tires of doing so herself, or living in a house and car filled with diarrhea, she may be inspired to take her Lomotil, as ordered.

Or not.
