AFIT Program

Hey this is for current AF nurses that know about the AFIT program. I am going to COT in August. I want to further my education but want to know when to consider applying for AFIT and how many positions there are in the program? And anything I should do to prepare to apply. Any help would be appriciated. Thanks!

I am currently in the AFIT program. There is a "Call for Canidates" that comes out every summer that will tell you everything you need to know.

Specifically, you usually need two time on station when you apply/three years time on station before you leave for school (COT/NTP doesn't count towards TOS).

Number of slots are different for each program.

I've got this on my radar as well, so thanks for the information. I was told in my chief nurse interview to let your new supervisor/chief RN know you're interested in AFIT immediately, and to be as awesome as possible (as a cop we would have said "sierra hotel") so you'll get excellent recommendations.

Getting an AFIT spot isn't that hard per say.....just need decent grades,GRE/good evals/ and then do some volunteer stuff in my case in order to make your application stand out.

Now my recommendation about AFIT and your supervisor/Chief Nurse: Wait to tell them that you are interested in AFIT especially if you work in critical care/ER until you know more about the atomosphere/politics there! I let my supervisor know when I got to Keesler that I would be applying to AFIT and they refused to let me do any additional outside training ie. CCATT. The reason they gave me for not letting me goto CCATT was because I might get an AFIT slot and all that CCATT training would have been wasted....

How do you find out about the "Call For Canidates"? Where does this information come from?

The Call of Canidates comes through your Chief Nurse. It is usually disseminated to all USAF nurses, but the problem I have had the last couple of years is that I don't have AF email account d/t school so I rarely get any official AF emails.....unless it is to tell me that I am late doing something then the AF seems to have no problem finding my email address...lol

I have a call for canidates for AY 2008 if you want a copy, if you do just PM your email. The whole thing is somewhere around 40+pages. Just keep in mind the number of slots and details in applying change from year to year.

We had a nurse come back from AFIT but was only gone for 6 month. Apparently it didn't go so well, haven't got all the details yet. I wonder if it is like the COT atmosphere?

USUHS (AFIT) CRNA prgram is nothing like COT. Nurse anesthesia school will probably be the hardest scholastic program you ever do, if you choose to go that route.
