Hiya, I
've been lurking here a while, reading various threads on the forums. If only I had known about this site during my training I could have saved myself a lot of hassle!!! :angryfire Oh well...
I am a UK trained RN specialising in Adult wanting to work in the US in a few years' time. From reading some of the info here I thought I'd get the process started now. I am wanting to work in California.
Now my question is this, I am currently working in Australia and have found some courses that should address the deficiencies that I have from my training, namely Maternity, Paeds and Psych (that would be all then!). Anyhow, I have found a uni in Melbourne that does theory in all these branches, but that is done as a Distance Learning course. I wondered if anyone knew if this would be acceptable for the CA BON. I am going to email the BON with this query, but have heard that they may not respond, so thought I'd try my luck here too.
Thanks
Rika

you will still need practical as well as the theory and they may want them both to be done at the same time.
Are you sure you are short on hours? reason saying this there have been a few UK nurses recently who thought they was short of hours and when assessed managed to have enough. May be worth just going ahead with CA and see what come back. Then if you are short you can sort it out.
Hiya,
Yes I am aware that I would need the practical as well and am trying to get some info from the uni about that too.
I am not 100% sure if I am short on hours but I have had no documented practical experience as part of my course in any of the 3 branches, I had one day with a midwife as part of my community placement, I've dealt with patients with psychological problems as part of my med/surg placements and very occassionally looked after children. I had to do something called EU Directives in which I had to do some research/writing on the 3 branches. I am not sure if that qualifies.
Also when I applied for my license here in OZ I noticed from my transcript that there was no mention of the EU directives or any hours related to that. I've emailed my uni, to warn them off my intentions with regards to my transcripts and the CA BON and I also enquired about my EU directives and hours etc. I've not had a reply as yet.
Anyhow, I am planning to get the evaluation done by the CA BON first as then I'll know for sure what I'd need to do, if anything.
I am researching some options in case I do need to make up hours so that I'll be prepared.
Thanks for your thoughts, sorry about the long winded email! Its just nice to be able to sound off to people who are going through the process or have gone through it. Its such a big help!
good idea getting eval done, just make sure uni does a break down on hours
Good luck
