ADN vs. BSN

Published

Hi everyone,

I am 18 years old and I am in my last year of high school and I am also enrolled in a "skills" school for Pre-Nursing. I was originally interested in becoming a Physician Assistant(PA), however this program is changing my mind and making me want to go to nursing school. I will be a CNA when I graduate and will have 2 points above anyone else at my local CC because of my affiliation in this program.

My question is: Would it be wise to attend a CC and get an ADN then go on to a RN to BSN program? Or should I just go to a four year university and get a BSN right away?

Any advice would be helpful.

Thank you in advance.

The best way to answer your question is for you to research the job market in your area/the area you want to work in after graduation. Many hospitals, due to the abundance of new grads hunting for jobs, are requiring all those applying to already hold a BSN. Other facilities may allow ADNs to apply but sign a contract stating they will complete an RN-to-BSN program within a set time period. Yes, an ADN will potentially get you into the job market and potentially earning money sooner, but the job market has to allow for you to be able to find a job that way.

Good question. It all depends on if you could get accepted though for the BSN program. These days they are competitive to get in, you'll need good grades and maybe also a good test score. It may be beneficial to go to cc for adn if you have financial issues, or maybe your GPA isn't stellar rock star for the BSN program, and yes you can do RN to BSN later.

Do a little research on recent posts here on AN. This is a common question and is asked and answered often. It really depends on your local job market. Will you be able to get a job as an ADN? In my market I was able to be employed immediately and I am finishing my BSN now. I will earn money while getting my BSN and the facility I work at is paying some of my tuition. Nothing wrong with the ADN but I would suggest getting your BSN as soon as possible to improve your marketability.
