Admission to nursing school

In my search for prospective nursing schools, I have noticed that many of them are limited access. Does this mean that one necessarily needs to be a 4.0 student or does it partially depend on where you apply (say a state university vs a private or smaller school- or a smaller campus associated with the larger university), and how much weight can factors other than grades play- i.e. do recommendation letters really matter, should one have some volunteer experience at a hospital, can one get preference if one is a transfer or out of state student? Any responses/advice would be appreciated. :)

At my nursing school (Morehead State University, Morehead KY), you only have to have a 2.7 to be accepted in the program. I don't think factors play a major role here unless they are having limited seating and everyone has the same or similar GPA, then they say the ones with the best grades get in. We are not required to have recommendations or any background in the medical field.

I have noticed A LOT of nursing schools in Kentucky and they are all supposed to be easy to get into. Even on discovernursing.com there is a list of schools with no waiting list and at least three are in Kentucky. I wonder why that is.

Well IDK about other schools but I know by experience that Morehead State University nursing school is very easy to get into but hard as hell to get out with a degree. Its a very low percentage that you start and finish without failing once and graduate from this school. If I had to guess its around 25% that start and graduate at their expected graduation date. Don't let the intructors fool you there.

Oh yea and at Morehead State University their nursing program there BSN or ADN will not give you a pinning ceremony no matter how much you beg em to. You only get a crap key chain. Which is ashame because the pinning ceremony is very special to the nursing students there.
