ACEN

I was researching this school a bit further after feeling a bit shaky about attending. I understood this program was both regionally and ACEN accredited, which was the type of program I wanted to attend. I need the flexibility of an online format, as I am an Army spouse and about to be a new mother. However, when researching the current status of their accreditation it was a bit worrisome:

  • Excelsior College (Associate) Albany, NY related to non-compliance with:
    • Standard 4 Curriculum, Criteria 4.1 and 4.2
      • There is a lack of evidence that the curriculum incorporates established professional standards, guidelines, and competencies and has clearly articulated student learning outcomes and program outcomes consistent with contemporary practice.
      • There is a lack of evidence that the student learning outcomes are used to organize the curriculum, guide the delivery of instruction, direct learning activities, and evaluate student progress.

      [*]Standard 6 Outcomes, Criteria 6.1, 6.4.1, and 6.4.2

      • There is a lack of evidence that the evaluation plan emphasizes the ongoing assessment and evaluation of the student learning outcomes through all four (4) phases of the curriculum.
      • There is a lack of evidence that the expected level of achievement for program completion is congruent with the ACEN guidelines.
      • There is a lack of evidence that the program's three-year mean for the licensure examination pass rate has been at or above the national mean for the same three-year period.
      • There is a lack of evidence that the expected level of achievement for program completion has been consistently met.

[*]Excelsior College (Baccalaureate) Albany, NY related to non-compliance with:

    • Standard 3 Students, Criterion 3.1
      • There is a lack of evidence that the admission policies for nursing students are consistently applied and congruent with professional standards and best practices.

      [*]Standard 6 Outcomes, Criterion 6.4.2 ï‚·

      • There is a lack of evidence that the expected level of achievement for program completion is congruent with the ACEN guidelines.
      • There is a lack of evidence that the expected level of achievement for program completion has been consistently met.

[*]Excelsior College (Master's) Albany, NY related to non-compliance with:

    • Standard 3 Students, Criterion 3.1
      • There is a lack of evidence that the admission policies for nursing students are consistently applied and congruent with professional standards, best practices, and state regulations.

      [*]Standard 6 Outcomes, Criterion 6.4.2

      • There is a lack of evidence that the expected level of achievement for program completion is congruent with the ACEN guidelines.

Meant to update this - there is information on EC's site: https://www.excelsior.edu/admissions/requirements/nursing-requirements/associate-in-nursing-requirements/

They reached an agreement with ACEN to remain accredited until May 11, 2020 at which point EC is withdrawing their accreditation. ACEN and EC have long had some fundamental philosophical differences, mostly centered around the lack of traditional clinicals with EC's program (which only admits people who already work in healthcare and can demonstrate a certain number of hours of direct patient care at various points in the program). They retain regional accreditation.

Where does this new status leave them re: actual state licensure going forward? As of now, the website states there are no restrictions in the states I am most interested in (NY/NC). Wondering how that will change come May.

Website says they will retain state and regional accreditation but that pertains to the degree itself.

They are only accepting students from states that don't require ACEN accreditation, so graduates from those states listed would be able to sit for the NCLEX if they graduate after May (barring any other requirements in place for various states that require additional hours, etc.).
