A fighter ace is a pilot who shot down five or more enemy fighters. So an ace unit is a unit who killed five or more patients. Sorry, can't help my sick sense of humor sometimes. An Acute Care of Elders unit specializes in the treatment of acute illnesses in the 65 or older population. You would expect to see geriatricians and nurses with experience in gerontology. For instance, medication dosages, expected outcomes and side effects are different.

The ACE unit that was in a hospital I previously worked in was simply a geriatric med-surg. The ratios were no different on that floor than on the regular med-surg floor, though that is great that your hospital has a smaller ratio. The medical director of our ACE unit was a geriatric specialist and the nurses there did recieve additional education and training in caring for the elderly and meeting their unique needs.
