accepting job that wasn't #1 choice

has anyone here accepted a job that wasn't their preference? i just interviewed for the job i REEEEEEALLY wanted this past week. i don't think the interview went well at all. now, i'm not really sure what to do with myself. there is no other position similar to this one in the area and if i don't get this job, i think that my career path with be entirely different than what i reeeeally wanted to do.

so, if you did take a job that wasn't your #1 choice, how did it work out for you?

What do you think went wrong with the interview?

Specializes in Med-Surg, Trauma, Ortho, Neuro, Cardiac.

You just might get the job.

Sometimes though we do have to take the long way around to where we want to go. I wanted to be an ICU nurse when I interviewed at the hospital and just barely missed the cut off date, so I took a job in med-surg. I'm still in med-surg but still have the opportunity to go into ICU should I choose. No big deal.

the interviewer only asked 3 questions... mostly about experience. since i am a new grad, i have no experience. the position is an internship, though, so i guess i was under the assumption that since it's a learning experience that experience wasn't necessary....especially for a new grad. i'm just so upset. this is literally the only job that i want.

how long does it usually take for a job offer after an interview? maybe there is still hope....?

Can't hurt to make a follow-up phone call, to express your thanks again for the interveiw and your enthusiasm at being considered....

Specializes in Pediatris & PICU.

DEFINITELY make a follow up call or go by for a QUICK visit. Recently a friend of mine went for her new grad interview for NICU and her interview was kind of 'sluggish' because she had been quite sick that day. Anyway, I encouraged her to call the nurse manager to let her know how excited she was about working in the NICU (ownership, but not too much) and that she wanted to be sure to let the manager know how much she desired this position (without sound desperate). Soooo....she went by about a week after the interview and met w/ her really quickly. When she told the nurse manager(NM) all that the NM said, "I'm so glad you came. I've been going over and over these applications and YOU HAVE THE JOB!!!!!"
