Accelerated Program after failing out of nursing program?

Published

Hello everyone,

I know your all probably tired of seeing me but needing more advice and questions.

I was planning on finishing with a bachelor's degree in a major called General Studies and possibly applying to an Accelerated nursing program in the spring. Although it is hard now since they will know I struggled as an undergrad.

As anyone ever tried this option before? Has it worked out? I know being traditional will be harder, but what about accelerated?

I just looked into Lewis University in Illinois, but just saw students are not elgible if a F,D,W came from another nursing course.

Also, I was thinking of changing my major to Health Information Management...has anyone been in this situation? I still want to be involved in healthcare since nursing might possibility not be the career for me.

The answers to your questions will be school specific, but in general if you have failed a nursing program before, many schools will not admit you without a very good reason why you failed and a plan to not make the same mistake. Also understand that an accelerated BSN program will be shorter and much harder than traditional due to cramming all that info into half the time. I'm not saying you cant do it, but you do definitely need to take a deep look at yourself and what you did wrong to fail the first time before attempting again.

I don't mean to be rude, but if you couldn't pass a regular BSN program, what makes you think you will be able to pass an accelerated one? An accelerated program is only going to be harder and more intense, and if you couldn't get through a slower-paced school, most likely, you will NOT make it through a fast-track program.

That being said, I would talk to your school about your options and see if they are willing to re-admit you under a probationary status. If that doesn't work, there are many other healthcare fields, such as Respiratory Therapy, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy (both PT and OT require a Master's at the minimum, PhD for PT in most places),Medical Assisting...there are other careers out there besides nursing.

Good luck!

Your best net is to return to your nursing program and try again; most nursing schools, let alone an accelerated nursing program is going to accept you with a failure from a previous program.

You have two options-both start with dusting yourself off, then either: 1. Return to your nursing program and complete it; or 2. Practical nursing program, Respiratory Therapy or another allied health program where your pre req's can transfer over; I strongly recommend the first option, since you failed your clinical-go back to your school, utilize your clinical lab and find a method in becoming comfortable and confident in clinical-you got the theory down; learn how to apply it.

Best wishes.

Yeah the only school I know for sure so far is willing to take me in is Chamberlain College of Nursing after I asked them if it was still possible to get back in after an unsuccessful nursing program.

I also know a couple of students who failed out of the program at school was able to successfully enter to other nursing schools and flourish.

Im still figuring out my options.

As for reapplication--I have until June 1 for fall admission again...Im thinking long and hard about it.

Hello,

Yes I can reapply to my school, but need to have special circumstances and reflect really deep on what I did wrong and what I will do to improve my confidence.

I know students who failed out of my school and still got into other nursing programs.

that's why I was thinking of the HIM major. Im not sure if that will be any different.
